New Zealanders, descended from those from The Netherlands, are reasonably used to being misidentified. The Netherlands’ tourist website identifies itself to English speakers as Holland. Dumbasses.
Australians, descended from British prisoners and raised in an unusually unforgiving environment, are reasonably overcome with national pride and identity.
China is playing a long game. Some Aussies are all too aware of Chinese economic impacts in the United States, and are worried of a conflict that could break out between China and the US over Oceana. The US has stayed silent on Tibet for decades; continued to stay silent on Hong Kong for years; and might stay silent on an occupied NZ.
