You should never assume malice. Always assume the person was simply not aware or educated on it. Because when you become aggressive, you are less likely to get your point across.
A simple "They are called (insert current term for that person), not traps!"
I'll be honest, the only term I know for a trap is fatuba(is that the correct term or is that specific?)
As I was just as unaware of any term.
Again, don't assume it's a malicious term. Probably just didn't know another term for it.

I didn't even mean to be offensive anyway. This is anime we're talking about, and it's just a catch-all term for crossdressing characters, not IRL people, don't mix those up.

These are both really poor excuses; it doesn't matter what you're intention was, what you said was something offensive. And it doesn't matter if it's "not for IRL people" implying that people who crossdress are 'traps' set for people is an incredibly shitty thing to say about them.
