Dr. Henry Cilekt was working on his current project for over 5 years now. Being the movie buff that he was, he saw that so many movies coming out these days involved alternate realties or different dimensions. Alternate realities and dimensions, for which there are differences Hollywood chooses to ignore (and so will we), is the widely accepted theory in the scientific community. The only issue was - no one has proven it.
That’s where Henry’s current project came into play - an instrument that would allow the user to jump through alternate realities at a whim. Infinite realities means infinite possibilities. Henry could discover a universe where cancer has been cured, or a universe where Alzheimer’s has been eradicated. He could find a universe with the answer to renewal energy, or maybe just a universe with the next multibillion dollar idea so Henry could retire even earlier than he currently projected.
Dr. Henry Cilekt was a child prodigy. From an early age he had an understanding of math and science that his teachers simply couldn’t match. His parents got him tutors that he outgrew in a matter of weeks, then some in a matter of days. As Henry got older his intellect seemed to grow even faster. That didn’t make Henry some strange social outcast, but maintaining relationships was always a bit difficult.
So now at the ripe youngish age of 31, Henry was running his own lab, but could never maintain a romantic relationship. Sure, there was Cindy, but she was a flame that burned hot and burned quickly. Henry started using dating apps, but his work never allowed him a social life. So instead of a woman, Henry recommits himself to his work in a way that a loving husband commits to a partner.
Having worked on his project for over 5 years now, Henry was just about completed. He just needed to name it and test it. Naming was the easy part. He settled on “Henry’s Universal Manipulation Portal” or HUMP for short. Henry couldn’t help it, he’s always been a fan of silly humor. Testing the thing was his main issue. Henry worked alone. He didn’t have an assistant or enough funding to hire test subjects. Just building the tech was expensive enough. Henry also refused to test on animals. Not only was he fundamentally opposed to animal testing, he also needed someone to share what they found in each universe. This all meant Henry was going to have to be his own test subject.
Henry couldn’t be more excited to test out HUMP. It was a beautiful piece of tech. A simple looking briefcase-shaped machine encased in a titanium shell. The machine did a number of things:
1) Before sending the Humper (anyone who uses HUMP… isn’t Dr. Henry silly?), the machine will scan the universe for the proper atmosphere for a human to survive.
2) The Humper will be retrieved after 1 hour in the alternate universe. There is no way for the Humper to return before this time. This is a precaution to travel with very limited tech in case Henry gets captured. He doesn’t want anyone reverse engineering his tech and attacking his world. The only tech that will go with the Humper are contact lenses that record everything the Humper sees and hears, along with an under-skin homing beacon that will bring the Humper home after the allotted 1 hour.
3) Initial Hump Jumps (more humor, ha!) send the Humper to a random universe. When the Humper returns, HUMP will catalog that universe so future Humpers can return.
Dr. Henry made the final tweaks to his machine and… HUMP was ready for use. He powered it up, got his homing beacon implanted under his skin, and was ready to go. Where would HUMP send him first? What kind of worlds will he see? These are the HUMP Jump Chronicles of Dr. Henry.
