What things have forum members heard people make fun of that aren't funny. (I'm not talking cruel things like making fun of someone with a disability, which I personally think is dispiciable) I just mean, like, a happening or such, that someone makes fun of, which isnt funny.

I'll start. I had a roommate and friend in college who was constantly fixated on making fun if someone had an upset stomach. He would say, with a huge smirk on his face: "You have the Hershey Squirts". I've had a lot of stomach problems in my life, so it used to irritate me to no end when he did this. He used to do the same thing if someone had an upset stomach the other way. He' d say things like "You have the heaves". It was particularly upsetting if someone was eating. Sometimes, our group of friends would be sitting at dinner on the college campus, and this guy would look at my meal, and blurt out : "You're going to be in the bathroom with the runs after eating that". Ironically, I picked up the phrase "Hershey Squirts" from him, but I dont use it if someone is eating, and I only will if appropriate.

So, thats the question: Things you have heard people make fun of, that aren't funny.

Mitch

Oh, that IS disgusting... :eeew: I wouldn't eat with that clod!! :hungry:
You had a stronger stomach than you thought if you could put up with that crap...

But -- among so many other things that really aren't funny 🙄 .... (but to select one I haven't complained about here)

I don't get it (well, I kinda do, but I won't make fun...) when people laugh at those who

trip, fall, roll down a flight of stairs, or worse, dive into the shallow end....
Yeah, it might look funny but any of those can do a increasingly severe number on the ole brain-pan.... :atom: Or spine... :grandpa:

(Bet *that answer wasn't expected... 😛 )

I know sports fans can be catty immature kids sometimes and take anything said about their team as a personal attack on themselves, so they lash back in whatever way they can think to hurt people. Being a New Orleans Saints fan, not a day goes by where some rival fans don't make some Hurricane Katrina related comment, even still today. ("Our team is going to finish what Katrina started", "You think Katrina did damage, wait until you see what we do", "I can't wait until Katrina goes back to finish the job", etc)

It makes me ask sometimes, "You do know 3000+ people died in that catastrophe right?". The only answer they have is either "Doesn't affect me." or "Well we're tired of hearing about it.". News flash, we're tired of hearing about it too. Every time some business uses it for profit, or every time some sportscasters mention it in how far we've come since then just because we won a game on that particular day. At the end of the day, I just think there are easier ways to take shots at the team, like the fact they had a history of losing for almost half a century before getting their championship. It makes me wonder what they'd say if you said to them, "I'm glad your team lost today, just like you family lost your little sister in that fire 3 years ago." It's really the same thing and just tasteless.

It's not things that are or are not funny, it's the way the person delivers it. Anything can be funny if the line is delivered well enough. Equally, a joke about anything can fall flat if it is not.

Being half white/half asian. It usually gets my goat. 😎

Hmm, to be honest, I'm generally alright with joking about anything. Making a joke about something serious doesn't actually cause harm. It seems people just get upset because the joker isn't, what, showing enough solemn reverence for a person/event? If you're around somebody directly affected by an event, or if you're just being obnoxious (like the guy in OPs post) then yes, shut up already. However in general, I don't think anything is just off-limits to joke about.

what with football being as big as it is over hear you hear alot of chants. for the most part theyre really funny but every now and then you get sick ones.

these are three of the worst ive heard.

1, a guy called sol cambell moved from my club tottenham to our arch rivals in 2001. ever since he has recieved huge abuse from us whenever we get the chance. every now and then though it gets out of hand. one time arsenal were due to come to play us at our ground sol cambells dad had died a couple of weeks before. all through the game people were chanting: 'wheres your daddy gone'. that made me quite sick.

2, same guy different chant. this one relates to him goin awol a few years back. to the tune of lord of the dance:
'sol sol wherever you may be,
not long now til lunacy
and we wont give a fuck when you hanging from a tree,
you judas **** with HIV'

bit far???

3, Again, this ones taking the piss out of family tradgedy. a guy called frank lampard lost his mother and then his team (another of our rivals) chelsea lost the champions league final on penalties which lead to:
'sing a song of chelsea and how they lost the cup,
they took the game to penalties then john terry fucked it up,
the team all looked like avram, the players were so glum,
but me i havent laughed so much since lampard lost his mum'

sick and wrong.

I know there used to be things that bothered me when people made fun of them. But that was many years ago when I was a child and hadn't yet grown up.

There's funny & there's would-be-funny-if-it-weren't.... Not.

I agree partially --- If it's something really nasty, loss of life, torture, etc., I don't find it funny at all --- regardless of who's in hearing range...

Armenian, Jewish or current Sudanese Holocausts, anyone? (Or 9-11, or Katrina...) I don't see the potential for humor. Especially not when people are dying *now.... :sowrong:

And if something does apply to someone directly --- The grade-schoolers among us just think that makes it funnier. 🙄

Some posters here are truly obnoxious about mocking Christianity, and not just the loony repressive fringe which (gives the rest of us a bad name...); the Christian-bashers go all out ---- even though they know it's unnecessarily, blatantly (purposely...) disrespectful, and basically.... totally un-constructive...
And they just get more obnoxious when they think they've touched a nerve.

--but God forbid someone even accidentally touches some topic dear to them... Suddenly they don't see the humor & will rip the unwitting "offender" a new one even if he or she didn't mean any offense, interestingly :illogical I don't find that hypocrisy funny either.

Babbles, my roommate was disgusting. A lot of people I knew didnt want to eat with him, for that reason.

I never believe in mocking anyone's religion. That is a very personal thing. To me, mocking someone's religion, is just as bad as someone who is racist, or prejudice, against homosexuals, or any other type of lifestyle. That to me , is wrong.

One thing my grandfather used to make fun of, is TV evangelists. He was Jewish, and not particularly religious. He also had respect for all lifestyles, and religions, but, he used to call TV evangelists, his "Sunday morning comedy". There used to be a guy named WV Grant on TV every Sunday morning. This guy would have people come on his show with some illness, or in a wheelchair. Grant would then proceed to put his hand on their head, or slap them on the front of the head, and they would miraculously get up from wheelchairs, and walk. Worse, the guy used to solicit contributions to his "church", by going on TV every Sunday preaching this crap. My grandfather used to sit and watch this program, and laugh his ass off, or start making the violin motion. I used to love it when he turned those shows on, because the whole thing was hilarious.

Sorry if that is a bit off the topic. Religion, not a thing to make fun of. TV evangelists like WV Grant. Comedy.

This, mixed with...

This.

Granted, there are very few things that should only be joked about VERY rarely if ever, but in general it's better to have a sense of humor and not be so up tight about most things.

And yes, sports fans can be giant douches, but it comes with the territory. Plus, it gives the chance to make fun of them much better (and classier) than their blatant insults. 😀

Another thing people make fun of that isnt funny, pulling a prank which causes physical harm or pain to someone.

I may have posted about this before, but, one time in college, a friend was telling me about someone he knew, who poured a bottle of Ex Lax into fruit punch that was already spiked with alcohol, at a frat house party. The frat brothers, and their guests, who drank the punch, all got violently ill. This friend was laughing hysterically as he told me the story. I was sitting there thinking to myself: "Extremely mean. I dont think I would like it, if I was drinking alcohol at a frat party, and got sick because I found out it was spiked with laxative".

Making fun of someone's physical harm or pain. Not cool at all.

My ancestors were part of the Armenian genocide. most people dont even know about that though. its overshadowed by the jewish holocaust, so noone makes fun of us.

Is it okay to make fun of Westboro Baptist Church?

I don't think it's funny when television and comedians use Cancer as part of a joke or bit. It's a very serious disease that I have known many friends to have lost immediate family members to. That is not to say that each one of us or a loved one could very easily develop cancer at any time. I never have understood why writers and comedians continue to feel that it is something that could be used as part of a joke punchline. I always feel totally uncomfortable when I'm sitting in a room and that comes up on a comedy television show and you start to sort of laugh, but then realize the guy in the room lost his mom to cancer and then realize that he could get very offended if you laugh.

To be honest, there's very little if anything that I can't find humor in. You just have to be aware of who's around when you're telling jokes that cross a line. For example, I ROFL'ed when I read

"I'm glad your team lost today, just like you family lost your little sister in that fire 3 years ago."

but I didn't lose my little sister in a fire 3 years ago. If I had, I might not see the humor so much.

Under the right circumstances, in the right context with the right company, anything can be funny. Then again, I'm a fan of Cyanide & Happiness, so inappropriate humor is kinda my thing.

Our humor is the same so you already know, I have no problem laughing about anything, and I'm the farthest thing from sensitive about almost any subject matter. I was just answering the question. 🙂

Personally when someone makes fun of someone or something that I personally take offense to, I chalk it up to ignorance and immaturity on their part and move on.....

Exactly right, Mitch -- I'd laugh my ass off too if it wasn't so very sad --- Those parasite "evangelists" are just Quacks of the lowest order, feeding off people's emotional & spiritual needs ---- They're not Christian, they're just savvy business-clowns....

And then there are the extremist fundamentalist nutcases that don't even really pay attention to the Bible they're thumping, they just re-write and misquote to suit their sadly brainwashed view of the universe --- I'd feel sorry except they victimize everyone else in the name of Christianity (too) and as I wrote earlier, they make "normal" Christians look bad
...who attempt to follow Christ instead of some bigmouth control freak/con artist...

But taking cheap shots at well-intentioned people's religious views for kicks is just ---snotty & immature at best... 🙄

I also agree, any kind of pain --- or agony, including ticklish non-con, 😡 obviously --- some say worse than pain ---
I agree, it's unbearable if badly applied....
At that point it's not even "tickling," it's just
nerve-ending-agony
 --- and no one's misery is amusing... Certainly not to the victim --

Or illness, mass, I don't see how anyone can joke about cancer either, goes way beyond tacky... :disgust: that death is everywhere ---

My ancestors were part of the Armenian genocide. most people dont even know about that though. its overshadowed by the jewish holocaust, so noone makes fun of us.

Yeah, the Turks really got away with murder, but their victims are protesting at least so they don't also get away with changing history -- I'm very sorry your ancestors were victimized (killed...) -- I'd say at least you were spared the stupid jokes, but --- people should be better educated & aware, especially here in the U.S. --- it's incredible what the everyday person hasn't been taught...

Personally when someone makes fun of someone or something that I personally take offense to, I chalk it up to ignorance and immaturity on their part and move on.....

Too true -- that's the best way to deal with the clods 🙄
Just hope they grow up & out of it eventually...

I'm pretty easy going too when it comes to this sort of thing. I'm one of those people that kinda needs to laugh about the serious things in my life in order to cope with it. In fact, I sometimes have a bad habit of making jokes about something going on in my life that make others very uncomfortable like everytime the old man took off on one of his binges, one of my favorite things to say was "he won't be coming back with any money, but for God sakes at least let him come back home with half a brillo pad. I just can't get these eggs out of this pan" or "I often prayed as a child that I would one day marry a rockstar. Maybe I should have been more specific." So when it comes to me, I'm cool with anything. fat jokes, moustache jokes, malocclusion jokes.. all good. I'm still not 100 percent on "you're so stupid" jokes, but the hubris is waning as I get older. The only thing that's off limits is derrogatory humor towards my squidlett. I have seriously exploded a few times because my mother in law will make fat jokes about her

People with disabilities.
People that are less fortunate and can't afford the finer things in life.
Homelessness/Bums. I never understood why people always get a rise out of someone else's misfortune.

Since I work with people with disabilities everyday, when people make fun of someone with a disability (no matter what it is) it baffles me. Anyone can become disabled at any time, how would they feel if someone then made them feel miserable?

I think just about anything can be funny, given the proper context and delivery. Life is my favorite running comedy.
