I’m curious how some of the jazz purists around here feel about artists such as Kenny G and John Tesh and other modern musicians of similar style , being regarded as…… jazz artists?

Should they share the same genre as John Coltrane, Monk, Sonny Rollins, Artie Shaw, Ellington, Arturo Sandovol, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakeley, Dave Brubeck ,Miles Davis?

In some clubs in New York, Chicago and even los angeles, mentioning Kenny G would get you tossed out the back door with the alley cats.

Even some of the younger and more contemporary artists like the Marsalis brothers seem to have a greater acceptance in the jazz world. Some folks physically cringe when they hear Kenny G and jazz mentioned in the same sentence.

Jazz experts and purists, your thoughts?

Kenny G doesn't really play any form of jazz I can identify. At best, I'd identify him as "easy listening" or something. At worst... I'd identify him as "plays flat and his vibrato is too wide."

You don't need to be a jazz expert or purist to know that Kenny G doesn't qualify as a jazz artist.

While I lay no claim to being an "expert" on jazz, I will side with Sarah and Drewskee here. Most popular music today seems to have no soul behind it, and leaves me cold. That is probably a generational thing. I'm an old fart. 🙂

I suppose thet depends on what the deffinition of Jazz music is.

There’s no doubt that jazz musicians are considered by many to be the clergy of a sacred community, and as such walk a fine line between purity and the interests of the label. It’s up to us as consumers to decide who’s crossed the line, and up to the artist to decide where his conscience is most comfortable.

An old fart, Bugman ? No, sadly (if I may say!) ; you are on the contrary tragically right !

I LOVE Kenny G's "Song Bird," despicable people. I don't care what you say. 😛 😀

Next is this: I don't really hate Jazz like Johnny, but I'm not really a fan of the genre.

And that's been the substance of much of the debate, Cosmo. Subjective opinion versus definition of the art form.

Yeah, I can't really wrap my mind around the "smooth jazz" concept, which is what Kenny G's music has been called by some.

Or it might be a technology thing, Buggy. So much of today's music seems to be computer generated and heavily synthesized. Synthetic vocals and lyrics will never compare favorably to the real thing.

Yes, I guess that's part of the problem. Computer generated music is a curse upon humanity in my never to be humble opinion. 🙁

I think the category (I refuse to use 'genre'; it's so overused that it makes me sick) known as 'smooth jazz' has its place...it makes great relaxing music in a doctor's office, or Lord & Taylor's. YOU assign the categories you want to things. To me, 'Rhythm and Blues' would be The Dominoes and Big Joe Turner and the first Drifters and Ruth Brown and the Five Royales and the Crows and the Wrens and the Ravens and Sonny Till's Orioles. What you hear referred to as R&B today has as much to do with the real thing as does orange juice and bourbon.

So, Jazz- from the Chicago and New Orleans, etc. varieties to Swing and Big Bands to Bebop and Cool- is Jazz to me. Kenny G, et al, is doctor's office music. Not BAD, of course, to me- but it has its place.

Please don't insult gay people by comparing them to Kenny G.

if you ever got jazzin magazine on one of it covers many years ago like 1999 or 2000 it had kenny g tied to a stake with 6 arrows in him. Showing and the main stream jazz community does not consider him in there group.
