.....so....there is a bit of life in English sport after all. England take the first test against the Windies, picking up where they left off in the winter by thrashing Brian Lara,s side at Lords. Ashley Giles gets his name on the famous Lords Board by taking five wickets and gets "man of the match" as well.

With the second test only two days away, leaving Lara,s hopeless bowlers no time to re-group could we be on for the unthinkable? back to back series wins against the West Indies? when did THAT last happen?

COME ON ENGLAND!!!

er.....ok......

....so, thanks for all your eager probing questions about the England/West Indies test series.

Dont know why I bother sometimes.

Ok, I'll take the bait, Red. Inform this dumb ignorant yank what sport you're refering to?
And just who are these "Lords" anyway?

Drew

Sorry Red, but we're in the heart of baseball season here in the states, so nothin' else really matters.....😉

Ah!...thankyou Drew.........

.....for your kind inquiry. The game in question is of course Cricket, International Test Match Cricket.

I know its a strange concept for you Americans, but we actually play sport against other countries, you should try it sometime, its not as bad as it sounds.

Lords is the ancient and ancestral home of Cricket. It is a cricket ground in London and its the one place every cricketer the world over wants to play. The England team have usually done badly there in recent years but now we have a team that can play a bit, and they have beat the once mighty West Indies at the world head quarters of international cricket.

I hope that has been of assistance to you, and thankyou for your inquiry.

I've just become familiar with Cricket courtesy of an old episode of "The Prisoner" (with extra thanks to Venray for lending me his Prisoner collection).
Seems like an interesting sport, Red.

So, perhaps that little get together known as the Olympics has slipped past your vaunted visage, old bean? I *believe* we've participated in a few, and even had a bit of success here and there despite the best efforts of other countries...

Don't get me started on tennis either. I think you'd agree THAT would have an ugly ending.

🙄 Q

I also think they reason(s) we don't play other countries in sports is simple:
1. Geography. Unlike Europe, where you can practically walk from country to country (ok, so I'm exaggerating a little), it's an 8hr flight just to leave the US from some parts of the country. Who wants to deal with that on a regular basis? Also, where do we fly to? Canada? Mexico? After that, you're talking days, not hours, of travel time.
2. I don't know how big English leagues are, but in the US MLB and the NBA, NFL, etc. have enough teams that it's not really neccessary.

Blimey Q!.........

.....you have to go and spoil my thread as usual by mentioning Tennis, you really are a very nasty piece of work!!

Just to clarify Indy's explanation slightly, but "Lords" is one of six international class cricket stadiums in the country, and the HQ of english cricket. It is named after Thomas Lord, who built it and founded the M.C.C. (Marylebone Cricket Club.)

AND DIDN'T WE WHOOP ARSE TODAY AS WELL!?!?!?!?

Yes indeed!!!...........

....and here was me getting all gloomy about what shite summer it has been for English sport. How wrong I was! back to back victories against the Windies, who would have given odds for that at the start of the season?

Btw jim dont confuse them with all that stuff about the M.C.C. they have enough trouble trying to work out the rules of the game as it is.
