All this talk about donuts reminds me of a rather funny true story that happened to me during my pot smoking days. I stoked up a bowl after work one night. Now, anybody familiar with pot will tell you that along with the pleasant buzz, there are two side effects: Hunger and paranoia. By the time I'd driven from work back to my neighborhood I had a big-time case of the "munchies" but it was like 2 am and just about everything was closed. Then I saw the little Krispy Kreme / Mobile Gas Station convience store which is open 24x7 and my red, half-closed eyes lit up.
I swung into the parking lot and immediately noticed three police cars parked there. Immediately I'm struck by a blast of paranoia. "Oh shit! Cops! What'll I do? I gotta get out of here! But what if they've already seen me pull in? It'll look too suspicious if I leave now. They might follow me and then I'm fucked!"
Like it or not, I was committed, so I took a deep breath, and regained my composure. I walked into the little store and was immediately dazzled by the overly bright florescents. I asked the guy behind the counter where the donuts were, and he pointed toward the back. I looked toward where he was pointing but all I saw were six cops standing back there shooting the breeze.
At this point, I'm thinking that I should have followed my first instincts and fled the scene while I could. Very stoned and uncertain, I turned back to the clerk and said "I'm sorry, where did you say they are?"
"Right back there, behind those cops..." Suddenly a mischievous grin spread across the clerk's face and to my horror, he calls back toward the cops in a "wise-guy" tone of mock aggrevation, "Hey! I know you guys looove donuts, but would you mind clearing a path for this guy?"
Fortunately, the cops all thought this was hilarious and cracked up. I laughed nervously along with the joke, like a character in a sitcom. Then I proceeded to get my donuts with six cops crowded around me. After I had paid and left, I shook my head and thought to myself, "nobody will believe this," and drove home without incident.
