That's how fast Usain Bolt ran the 100 metres at the World Championships in Berlin yesterday. My first thoughts were "what the fuck?!", or at least they would have been if he hadn't finished the race before I'd had time to watch it.

He finally decided to run the full race rather than ease up at the last 10 or so meters. The guy is getting ready to turn 23, who knows how fast a time he may but up over the next few years; he is just plain scary!!!!

9.58 seconds on the track is the equivalent to driving 30 mph in a car....

and the fact that he is only 23 makes it even scarier.... thank god I am not into track anymore

Roffle >_<

What I find most amazing though is that in the same race Tyson Gay ran 9.71, which was world-record pace not 18 months ago... and came second. By 2 metres.

Michael Johnson said on the BBC coverage that there's no point in other people turning up to the 100 metres until Bolt decides he's through with it, because there just isn't anything for them to aspire to; they can't be the best in the world, because Bolt is, and there's nothing they can do to catch him. I agree the fact he's only 23 is a bit scary, but I honestly think he's so far ahead of the field there's a chance he might just stop out of sheer boredom >_<

learn to catch a football and play wr in the NFL and make millions. Thats what bolt should do

they thought about that, two problems

1) he can't catch a football for shit
2) he is too skiny....take one good hit up the middle, and he is DEAD

9.58 at the age of 23 = sheer insanity. Now the debate will have to become the "Will Usain Bolt break the 9 second barrier?"

His anaerobic fitness level (short-run endurance a.k.a. sprinting) is off the charts so the 100 and 200 should be cakewalks for him, but ponder this: what if he works on his aerobic fitness level and gets it to the point where he can challenge races like the 400 and 800 metres? That's just the individual races, what about relay races? Jamaica can clean house for years with Bolt and Asafa Powell.

The guy is way beyond an enigma! If I'm not mistaken, I believe in most of his pro races he has beaten either the course record and/or the world record. There's no wonder why writers at the Beijing Olympics had some minor debate on the biggest story: Phelps' medals are impressive but the fact that Bolt set a World Record and coasted the last few metres is just nuts!

The guy is an absolute freak; but lets be realistic here. He has ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE of breaking the 9 second barrier. Even for todays top sprinters the 10 second barrier is still a big deal for most guys.

And to think he would even contemplate running 400 and 800 meters is absurd. His muscle structure and memory are designed for sprints and not further distances.

Michael Jordan was the top athlete in the world for years and decided to attempt to player minor league baseball. He was a terrible in AA much less trying to play in the BIGS.

Wow, you seem to have conducted some extensive tests on him! Care to share the result forms with us? or does that fall under medical confidentiality?
Actually, Bolt is originally a 400m runner. For a long time in his career he ran 200 and 400, the 100 actually came later!! He has a 45.28 personal best in 400, which even today would put him at the world elite.
I have no doubt that if he decides so and sets his mind to it, and practices to that effect, he will break the WR in 400 as well.

First of all if you anything about muscle fibers , they tend to acclimate to repeated training of a specific nature. Running all out in the 100 meters is completely different than the pace and structure of the 400 much less the 800. The amount of individual training it takes to run one event such as the 100 meters is staggering. Then trying to train for longer races such as the 400 and 800 would be almost impossible much less counter-productive.

When Carl Lewis ran the 100, 200, sprint relay and then participated in the long jump the biggest concern the experts had was could he do all this and still be at his best.

Are you telling me that Bolt could run all the qualifying races it would take make the 100, 200 , 400 , 800 individual finals and it not effect his performance at all ? Then run the semi-finals and finals in the sprint-relay and mile realy as well in one meet ?

That isn`t very realistic...

No, I never said he could run all events in one Olympics or WC, or even just three of them. That's too superhuman. And I acknowledge the difference in muscle strain between 100 and 400.
All I'm saying is that your talk about "Bolt even contemplating the 400 is absurd, muscle memory, etc". is baseless in facts and history. Have you even read what I wrote? Bolt already did this transition the other way around. He was ORIGINALLY a 400m runner, with a world class personal best at a very young age, and made the transition to 100 to become what he is today. Looks like his "muscle memory" adapted quite well, wouldn't you say?

Of course it would take training. But given his background, I'm sure that if he decides to transfer back to being a 200 and 400 runner, he will break the WR in 400. He has it in his system. or, if you will, in his "muscle memory".
As for "contemplating it" There are plenty of reasons why he might contemplate doing that one day. Nobody has ever held the WRs for 100, 200, and 400 all together. Since nobody other than himself will break his WR in 100 anytime soon, he has plenty of time to conduct a training program to that effect. He can break the 400 while still holding the WR in 100. All it would take is his decision.

Its very impressive, he beats his previous record by 0.11 tenth. He set this one for long, and i bet it'll take long to be beaten, even by himself, cause you must take in count the climatic conditions as well, he had +0.9 wind. Anyway don't expect under 9.50 until a couple of years.

Bolt is amazing. My favorite moment is still the Olympics, as arrogant as it was. How much better can you be than to be so far ahead in the Olympic championship of an event that you pull up in celebration and still set a record?

I have to agree with the argument that if he wanted to, Bolt could run and win the 400, probably in world record time. I don't think he could do all three and the relay, but I think if he chose to, he could do the 400 and the relay, and take comfortable golds in both. He's too good a runner not to.

I also think he'll break 9.50 in the next 2 yrs. Maybe wishful thinking... but I wouldn't be surprised.
