On October 27, 1904, the first subway line in New York City opened. The fare was 5 cents ($0.05). That line is still running today, and now extends from South Ferry at the southern tip of Manhattan to Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. The fare is now $2.50.

$2.45 increase in 110 years- not too shabby if you ask me... Kind of impressive with the rate everything else has climbed.

How many rides do you get on a monthly pass?
There is no limit to the number of rides on a monthly pass, but when it is used, it can not be used again for 15 minutes. That prevents two or more people traveling together from using the same monthly pass.

Not a New Yorker myself, but I've found the subways to be a fast, reliable and occasionally entertaining (buskers rock!) way of getting from point A to point B when in The City.
