12 Episodes or 6???

A couple of the SW-related threads have questioned Lucas's change from a 12 Episode saga to six over the years. It has nothing to do with money or running out of ideas.

In the very beggining, early '70's, while George was writing the original story, he realized how huge it was going to be. His very first thought was a twelve-episode saga. When actual screenwriting started, this had already been whittled down to nine.

The last three were never abandoned, but became part of the original trilogy. Originally, Leia was not Luke's sister and many things were different, but it all ended with the Battle of Endor. This was compressed into three films, and Lucas always had the prequel trilogy planned out (more or less).

Over the years, the rumors of the number of Episodes grew through various sources and foggy memories of what he may or may not have said way back when.

All in all, by the time the real meat of filming was involved, it was already a six-episode story.😎

i thought it was 9

i sorta remember back to 1977 when star wars first came out.
the was suposed to be three film in the works, then 3 more about how all this came to be, then 3 more about what happens after the evil empire is destroyed. i haven't heard anything since then saying there was a change in plans. i hope not!

I read a bit about this on the starwars.com site quite awhile back. If memory serves, there was the thought of three episodes to follw the original trilogy, but by the time Empire was written, Lucas has the "last 6" down to three. He knew he was going to do the prequels afterwards, and realized that retaining actors might not be possible for a trilogy to be filmed thirty or so years after the fact. The most important aspect, though, was the fact that he'd written the original trilogy to contain all of his vision for the story. Many stories still circulate about the number of Episodes, but sad to say that it'll all be over after Episode III.😎

Actually, I did read somewhere recently (don't remeber where) that there could indeed still be 3 more films, but they would happen only if -

A. Lucas was still interested, or passed the torch to someone else ... and

B. There would still be another 20 year gap between films, just like the 1st & second trilogy. Lucas would be around 85 then and he doesn't think he'd be interested in doing the last 3 movies....
