Is it common for people to be that demanding and rude? Sadly, moreso than anybody'd like. Does that make what happened to you okay? Definitely not. I can't count the times I've left in the middle of RPs, serious discussions, and goofing off online due to anything from yes, being so tired I had to go to family being in the same room as me to my internet dying. My friends don't care-they know spit happens and they let it slide.

Damn, I'm sorry that happened to you. That definitely doesn't sound normal. Then again, I've heard that the chat room is a lot less friendly than the forum.

As someone who goes in the chat room somewhat regularly that isn't common at all. While I try and give a heads up if I have to go somewhere sometimes that just isn't possible and everyone I've chatted to after the fact seems to understand that sometimes things happen. Sorry for your experience, but I wouldn't say that's particularly common.

I seem to be missing something here, unless the rules of RP have changed since the 90's. It's like your having a sexual experience with someone, you fall asleep on them, and they get angry. Typical cause and effect, so I'm missing what the problem was here.
