53 years ago today Sandy Koufax pitched his perfect game, which was also his fourth no-hitter.

It was a remarkable game in that the Dodgers, who won 1-0 as the home team, had only 26 plate appearances themselves, for a total of 53 by both teams, a record that will, IMHO, certainly never be broken.

Koufax struck out 14, then a record in a perfect game which has since been tied but never broken.

Lou Johnson was the only base runner in the game. He walked in the fifth inning, was sacrificed to second base, stole third base, and advanced home on a throwing error by Cubs' catcher Krug on the steal of third. The run was unearned, making the Cubs' pitcher, Bob Hendley, a very hard luck loser.

Lou Johnson doubled later in the game for the only hit but was left on base.

The Cubs: 27 up, 27 out in 9 innings.
The Dodgers: 26 up, 24 out, 1 walked and scored, 1 hit and left on base, in 8 innings with no need to bat in the bottom of the 9th.

An audio of Vin Scully calling the top of the 9th on the radio is here:
