On Thursday night pinch-hitter Mark Loretta hit a walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 9th to give the Dodgers a victory in game two of the NLDS.
It was the fifth walk-off hit in a postseason game for the Dodgers. I saw it on TV as I had three of the other four (but not the first one, which was before I was born).
The other four times it has happened:
1947 World Series, Game 4: Pinch-hitter Cookie Lavagetto breaks up Bill Bevens' no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, hitting a 2-RBI double to give the Brooklyn Dodgers a come-from-behind victory.
1956 World Series, Game 6: Jackie Robinson hits a 2-out, RBI single off of Bob Turley in the bottom of the 10th inning for the only run of the game. Clem Labine has the 10-inning, complete game shutout victory. It was the last hit of Robinson's career; he retired after the 1956 season rather than accept being traded to the hated jints.
1978 National League Championship Series, Game 4: Bill Russell hits a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning off of Tug McGraw to win the game and the NLCS for the Dodgers.
1988 World Series, Game 1: Pinch-hitter Kirk Gibson hits a two-out, 2-RBI home run off of Dennis Eckersley in the bottom of the 9th inning with two outs to give the Dodgers a come-from-behind victory.
It is interesting to note that all five walk-off hits came with two outs and three were by pinch-hitters.
