A Question of Tribe

The Irish are, not sure about the Scots.
The dictionary isn't much help either: Celts

1. One of an Indo-European people originally of central Europe and spreading to western Europe, the British Isles, and southeast to Galatia during pre-Roman times, especially a Briton or Gaul.
2. A native speaker of a modern Celtic language or a descendant of such a speaker, especially a modern Gael, Welsh person, Cornish person, or Breton.

scotch on my father's side

it has been my understanding that the scots are not of the same people as the irish. there has been much inter-breeding with the english, and the norse people, in both groups. perhaps that's where they get their few similarities?

Yes, they are both considered to be celtic peoples. Though it gets seriously muddy. The Scotts had distinct bronze and stone age tribes in their areas (Which is todays ireland) before the Celtic invasions of the isles in the 7th and 8th centuries BC. The Scotts invaded what we think of Scottland after the fall of Rome. There was then a lot of mixing with the Celts, Picts and other Nordic races that dropped in to visit.
