About Spambots

a spam bot who joined in 2005? i don't understand...

Solarcharger isn't the spambot. The spambot, "fghi835," joined on December 30, 2008 but was promptly deleted along with its posts. (The spammers post their links everywhere, such as forums and blog-comments sections, in hopes of getting a higher search-index position.)

ah i didn't think so....silly me..i guess i missed those posts..slinks away in shame..

No, I'm pretty harmless. Sorry if I somehow startled you, Izzy. Thanks for stepping in on my behalf, Valerie. In fact, I still don't really understand what a Spambot even is!

It's a program that loads web sites and probably checks the page header for some key text.

for example this page has

"<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin 3.7.2" />"

in the code so it knows this is a forum.

The program then looks for "submit" or "post" links and sends it's message to the forum script submission form and "bingo" - a new spam post (but probably not about bingo).

Why do certain companies always have to spam people,it's really annoying along with hackers

I've asked myself the same question and it comes down to one reason - there's money to be made from it. It's hard to believe but people must buy things from spam advertising. The spammers often hire technically skilled people to create these programs and that costs them money. They would stop immediately if there was no profit in it.

I would like it to be made netiquette (like NOT WRITING CAPITALS) that no person ever buys from a spam advertised product. If this were to be adopted universally spam would dissapear overnight.

As for hacking that will be with us forever as there is always the intellectual challenge of "can I do this" or "what if I do that". This is the same creative force that drives us continually on to better software products. You will find that usually the person discovering the "exploit" does nothing with it but allows or informs other parties who put them to distructive use. These people are not techncally capable (script kiddies) of finding these issues themselves so it is the ethics of the hackers (who should know better) that is the main problem here.

That's what I'd like to know. I have a couple of bridges they might be interested in.

Who is falling for these scams.I thought by now everyone would know better.

I just received an email from the Nigerian prince. He is going to give me $10,000,000 if he can use my account to hide his money. What a deal!

Who are falling for these schemes? The blind ignorant masses of humanity. I mean just look at the Bernie Madoff ponzi scandal. That man conned over $50 Billion from supposedly savvy, educated people.

P. T. Barnum would have made a killing today.

I even got an email (very official-looking) from a person claiming to be with the IRS, stating they short-changed me in last year's tax returns and wanted to send me $150,000 (including late fees and intrest) and simply wanted my bank account and PIN number to direct deposit the money into my account

Now I may have been born.... but it was not yesterday.

The company I work for has a lottery site that gets linked to in these "You've won the lottery just by having an email address" 419 scam emails. Sadly I've seen people send us cheques for hundreds of dollars and a full scan of their passport or other identity documents. These are highly educated people from their profiles?

The less charitable side of my character sees this as economic Darwinism - if you are too stupid to hold on to your money then the person you are sending it to is economically "fitter" and deserves it.

It seems we need to put all new internet users through a basic training course to prevent them from falling for these scams.

PS: well moderated Mistress Val - we had wondered totally away from the original thread subject.
