Adware/Spyware?

How can I get rid of Adware/Spyware? Right now, I use Ad-Aware SE. It gets rid of the ads temporarily, but whenever I reboot my computer, they come back. And I'm not sure if this is adware, or spyware, but Mozilla pops up and it shows either a number of things each time: Jenna Jameson having sex, Ebony sex, Penis enlargement pills, Girls looking for sex/marriage, and weightloss pills. They only come up about every 10 minutes or so, but it's annoying if I'm writing an E-Mail, because I'll press "Back", and everything I wrote will have been deleted.

Do you have a pop-up blocker installed? That should help with the e-mails.

Ok, so here are a few things you can do:

First off are you using the "immunize/heal" button after you finish scanning your computer with Ad-aware? If not then thats why you can't get rid of them.

Or:

They might have been saved in System Restore. You need to disable system restore, reboot, scan for the problem and finally re-enable system restore.

Do you know how to do that? (If not let me know which version of windows your running and I'll give you instructions)

Also, before you run any scanners make sure you close any other applications that are running on your system especially browsers.

Remove temporary internet and other files not needed with CCleaner (http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html)

Run CCleaner with the default options to clean out temporary files. Check the clean "Delete Index.dat" checkbox. Only use the Windows tab and select Run Cleaner. Do not run any other options from other tabs.

Try a few different scanners also.

Hope some of this helps solve the problem. If not, let me know.

Thanks, I'll try spybot. Do you know if it costs anything?

Also, no. I don't have a pop-up blocker installed, only because Mozilla has a built-in pop-up blocker. I always use Mozilla. Never IE. 😀

No, I don't click that. Here's what I've been doing...

I usually do a smart scan first. Than once it's done, I click "next". Than I click "Select all objects", than I click "next" again and it deletes them, usually.

I don't know how to do all that other stuff. But, I'm using a Windows 98 ME.

ok, when you first open Ad-Aware right above the "start" button is "check for updates now". Click that first and see if there is a new update to download. If there is then download it and click "start".

Instead of doing the "Smart System Scan" choose the "Full System Scan".

See if that helps.

If not I'll show you how to open system restore.

Hope it helps!

I have tried the full system scan earlier, right before the first three smart system scans. I'm running CCleaner now. Since I've ran it, nothing has popped up. 😀 Thankyou.

Will this mean I can reboot my computer and whatnot without having all this stuff coming back?

You may have just needed to clean out your Temp Internet Files. Thats what CCleaner does. Restart and see if that solved the problem.

CCleaner completed, and I rebooted. But, once my computer finished startup, popups started coming up again.

On CCleaner, I unchecked "Delete index.dat file", than ran it. Was I supposed to do that? Also, I ran CCleaner again. It stops the popups temporarily. (It's completed again, now.)

spybot

.... I also recommend spybot. I installed it a couople of months back. Is free but the site 'owners' offer you the chance to make a donation (through paypal) if you wish.

I was very impressed. It cleared out all sorts of gunk that the anti virus scans did not pick up even though they are programmed to search for spyware.

I hope it works for you. Do checkfor updates once you have downloaded.

Ive recently come under the spyware attack of clickspring(wtta.exe) All my scanners pick it up and delete but once i reboot it respawns. My scanners pick it up immediately and delete it but its prob in my registry that it keeps comin and its not in my start up, i use norton, avg and ewido security suite, anyone else had wtta.exe and been able to get rid of it?

Ok help out a computer illiterate. Whats the difference between spyware and adware and how do pop ups fit into that equation? Most importantly how to remove all of them...do I have to buy a disc like Norton Antivirus 2005 which takes up all my memory and doesnt work or is there a logical way?

Hi, Melissa,

Spyware is software that collects personal information from your computer, usually installed surreptitiously. Adware is software that serves unexpected advertising, also usually installed by stealth. Antivirus programs do not usually remove spyware or adware, and even specialised removal programs are usually not very good.

Norton is the worst security product I have ever used, a memory hog with poor detection of trojans. I highly recommend AVG Free antivirus, and Disspy free antispyware; links for both are in my article here.

Best regards,

Im gonna give those links a try when I get home from work. Thanks Val I owe ya one...actually I owe ya so much I lost count so youll have to take a raincheck! 😎

You're very welcome, Melissa 🙂 Please be sure to check this link at the Symantec website for special uninstallation instructions for NAV 2005 if you experience any problems.
