Actually, from what I've heard (get your grains of salt ready), it's not the books. It's a 19 year old Alice coming back to Wonderland some time after the events of the books. This way, he evades having to interpret the books.
At least that's IMDB's claim. The set up, not that he's doing it to evade...lol
Also, it's more an ensemble than a Depp movie. Alan Richtman is the Caterpillar (awesome), Michael Sheen is the Rabbit, Anne Hathaway is the White Queen, Stephen Fry is he Cheshire Cat, Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts, etc. It's just that Depp is the Biggest star in the movie, so he's the focal point. The Aussie girl playing Alice is actually the lead of the movie insomuch as an ensemble has a lead.
But Burton is with HBC. Lisa Marie was in all his movies while they were together too. It's his thing. Not that I disagree entirely with you, Annie. I'd like to see less of her too. I think Depp works with him so much just out of sheer fun. They're in a position where they can make movies together just cause they enjoy it (and they make a crap-ton of money). Sorta like Kurt Russel and John Carpenter in the 80's. But I would like to see Burton work with someone like Ice-T just because it's so friggin odd....lol. Truthfully, a thriller with Burton directing Viggo Mortensen seems like a cool idea....
I'll see it. Dunno if I'll wait for DVD or not, but I'm looking forward to it.
if for no other reason, I gotta see Richtman as the Caterpillar...lol Tho I don't think we'll get "Whoo are youu?" And that's too bad.
