I detest pro basketball, but I'll grant Allan Iverson is one hard ass motherfucker and one of the toughest athletes in the world today.

Also his reputation as being a "thug" is entirely undeserved. I'm always shocked that he's not used more often as an example of the consumate pro with his work ethic being used to show kids how it should be done.

Driving to the basket? Or a couple years back when he had an injured hip yet played every game of the NBA Playoffs? The guy is about as thin as string, but he goes for the hoop every night, and doesn't let anyone stop him.

As far as using him as an example for kids, he's famous for dogging through practice or skipping altogether - he can get away with it due to his talent but that's a dangerous lesson to teach to kids who don't have his skills - you don't need to work hard as long as you show up on game day? It is no accident that the Sixers are shopping him more often than they are trying to build around him.

I'm never a big defender of people consisidered thugs, but Iverson didn't hit that girl with the chair. No witness ever came forward and said that. There trial was a farce, and the fact is he was only a kid when it happened.

Tron - not looking to argue for its own sake but I'd call him a thug. Felony conviction (and I understand that virtually every ex-con claims they were railroaded) and subsequent arrests for speeding, weapons possession, drugs, domestic violence, assault, criminal trespass ... now I know arrests alone don't mean anything but that's an awful lot too explain away as coincidence or police persecution. Convicted of hitting a girl with a chair in a riot, had a 911 call that he threw his wife out of the house naked ... On the court (and out of the other court) everything about the guy says "your rules don't apply to me as long a I play well", will not practice hard, flaunts coaches authority by leaving practice early, showing up late and will tell you he's all about winning a championship. His personal and professional life would not recommend him as an example for kids. Consider Allan Iverson's own words:

.....ok, so you all know my thoughts on U.S. sports and how I enjoy winding you septics up on the subject but for cryin out loud!!! basket ball players?? "tough guys"???? dont make me laugh.

Basket ball may be all kinds of good and worthy things, but, a "tough guy sport"???.....please!!!

I have played it many years ago and its a very exausting game which needs very high levels of skill and fitness, but in aint no tough guy game. I know you all like to level the same kind of critisism at soccer, but in my experience having played both games, basket ball is a girls game in comparison to dodging the flailing boots and flying snot of a game of footy.
