......yep, ok, you have heard this crap from me time after time, and its getting a bit boring I know. So, ok, how about I make some sort of attempt to take an interest in US sports for a change? maybe be a little more positive? maybe cut out the usual Limey moaning?......thats seems pretty reasonable.

So , here goes, its time for you all to educate me on American sports, help me to see the light, try and cut out my normal biggotted, predjudiced view on the subject.

Lets see...where shall we start? lets pick a sport at random....er.....maybe.....motor sport, how about the Indy 500?

Lets start with some real basic goofy type questions, (please excuse my ignorance) like ,say, who won yesterdays indy 500? and where was he from?

Umm.. lemme see.. excuse my ignorance, but I do believe he was British? And that's the first British winner since.. hmm.. lemme see.. been soo long.. 1966??

Ok. And how many NASCAR Championships do the British have? hmm.. lemme count.. nope.. nope.. drawing a blank here.

Is NASCAR a real sport? Hmm.. lemme see.. if you put yourself in a steel machine, race around various tracks at sometimes around 200mph.. where the interior of the vehicle is well around 100 degrees.. where there are no time-outs.. and some of the races last well over a couple hours.. and just slightest mistake or miscalculation could not just injure you but cost you your life..

well, what do you think?

Excuse my ignorance.. but what exactly was the point of your post??

If I was into sports I'd help you out But I am one of those rare Yanks that don't care for sports Especially professional sports I know I know It's a shock hearing that from a Yank :jester:

Good point morefeatherz, what was the point of this post?

Ok, I'll play! Since Red and I have had some well-publicized (albiet good-natured) go-rounds concerning football...

Red, American Football is played with what you call "body armor" not for the reasons you suspect (Americans are wimps who can't handle slamming into each other 400 times in 3 hours) but because we're smart enough to know what body armor is for. Who wants to wind up toothless, crippled, retarded and perpetually drunk by 35 because they were to proud to protect themselves?

Oh yeah...rugby players. Sorry, forgot. :xpulcy:

Toothless: That's what God made Rugby players wear gumshields for.

Crippled: Fair point, but the number of crippled Rugby players is very, very small.

Retarded: Let's not go there 😛

Perpetually drunk: Uh, body armour doesn't really do much in this area. Unless it makes players too bulky to get into a bar.

As far as NASCAR goes? I really don't find it a great thing: driving 500 miles in a CIRCLE?! Only in America with oil prices skyrocketing and cutting into people's pockets could we still endorse a sport like that!

First off, there are various courses on the 'circuit'. Road courses are a lot more than a 'circle'. Secondly, I used to think the same about NASCAR until I was 'educated' on the sport by an actual driver who has participated in competition. As far as oil prices, etc., NASCAR is actually trying to help end such troubles. Through engine modifications, experimentations, driver testing etc., NASCAR is actually trying to reduce fuel waste, tire wear, engine malfunctions and actually working on creating car parts and engine additions that will reduce the amount of fuel needed.

One analogy is purposely giving yourself germs to cause a cold (flu vaccine) to actually reduce the chances of sickness in the long run. By using fuel now, NASCAR is hoping to reduce waste in the long run.

And while NASCAR doesn't have 'literal' obstacles to deal with, they do have the obstacles of rookie drivers, new crew chiefs and pit crews and in some cases new engines to deal with. One of the amazing things about NASCAR to me is the driver is actually risking his life on the single call of the 'spotter', whom he never sees during the race. If that spotter loses attention or miscalculates, the driver could end up in the wall or worse. We're not just talking a sprain or bruise and 30 days on the DL or out for a season. In no other sport does the actual participant submit to such risks. That's the true meaning of 'teamwork'.

errr.............

.........touched a nerve it seems. Did I say that already?
