Do you still consider Baseball to be America's Pastime, or do you think its Football, or even Basketball? I personally think its football but I know I'm biased because I live in the South where everything seems to revolve around football

I think at this point, America is such a big and diverse country that we don't have "one" national pasttime. As you said, you're from the South, where football is king. In Pennsylvania and Iowa, the same could be said for amateur wrestling. Certain places follow basketball in the winter, then baseball, then soccer.

In terms of professional sports, I'd agree with you and say football probably is the most popular. Baseball is still great, but 162 games spread out over six + months (not even counting spring training) makes it hard to maintain your interest if you're a casual fan. People might watch the NBA more this year because of the 3 Kings of South Beach, but even then, it'll likely not be close to touching the number of NFL fans out there.

If there's one thing we can agree on, its this. It's not soccer. 😀

If you lived in New York it revolves around baseball 365 days a year. But when Football has records from 150 years ago and it traces it roots back to the 1800's ( professionally NOT college ) then and ONLY then can it be considered America's National Pastime. Until then...it will always have a lot of catching up to do.

Maybe its that way in NY, but in the rest of the country where owners don't have gobs of cash to throw around to every decent player the NFL is KING. Baseball has allowed itself to become irrelevant and a mockery, while the NFL is now a year round entity.

The amount of time that a league has been established doesn't figure into the equation, son. A pastime is just an interest of a person and people are more interested in football than any other sport in this country.

Yeah, whenever someone says "America's Pastime" they're still talking about Baseball, but I think it's mainly because they haven't updated what's really America's Past Time... I think Football is the most popular sport in this country. Sure there are hot spots where football isn't as popular as baseball, such as NY, because you have the annoying Yankees. Obviously people are going to like baseball more in NY because of them.. even though some might still like the Giants, and Bills.. and well I guess the Jets.. you still have the Yankees and more people are going to be focused on that.. And maybe in southern California because they only have the chargers in football but they have the Dodgers and Angels, and Padres in baseball so you might find more people that like baseball.. but still over all the country I think football is more dominate, maybe fallowed closely by Baseball, and third is probably Basketball and then Hockey...

And well,as one person pointed out, one thing is for sure, it's not Soccer lol...

I would say football is "America's past time" at this point.

Actually mtTicklemonster, in the LA area, the fans are a lot more passionate about the Los Angeles Lakers than they are with any other sport. The Dodgers and Angels do not get the same amount of interest at this point in time as the Lakers do...

Oh, I totally forgot about the Lakers.. lol. If I woulda remembered about them i probably woulda have said they're more of a basketball area, because it's the same thing with NY.. NY has the Yankees so they like baseball more, LA ha the Lakers so obviously they'd pay more attention to basketball.. I just wasn't thinking about basketball, even though I mentioned basketball lol I live in Central Cali so basketball is not on my mind. 😛.

From what I know, unless it's changed, baseball has always been considered "The National Pastime".

What an earlier poster said about baseball is true. The baseball season is so long, that it's impossible to watch 162 games a year, unless one is., retired, and addicted to nothing but baseball. There's work, family and social schedules, and just general life.

I have the MLB extra inning package on my cable system, which broadcasts most of the games. By no means do I revolve work schedule or social schedule around baseball. For "Special games". Say, Mets Vs Braves, which I particuarly enjoy, or, if the Atlanta Braves are in the playoffs, I will try to work my schedule to be home so I can watch the games if I can. That having been said, there have been plenty of times that I've missed Mets V Braves, or even playoffs, due to work, school, social schedules, etc. For those games, I will try harder to see them than others, but, for the other.. 140 odd games a year, my attitude is, if I see them, I see them, and if not, okay too.

Anyhow, hope my post wasn't too wordy or off topic, but this is just how I see it.

I think Basketball has the same problem as Baseball.. Basketball lasts from like October to June... But I'm not the biggest basketball fan anyways.... Plus, football to me, seems more exciting than other sports and gets more people to watch, plus (i know basketball has them too but...) Football has cheerleaders lol...

Forgot the Lakers? lol...

Baseball will always be around, but football and basketball has surpassed it. Think about it, both of those sports are marketed better. You see athletes from basketball and football hawking more products than you see baseball players do. The baseball players are just not in Americans faces as they used to be.

Funny thing is, basketball season is actually longer than baseball. Hockey is the longest. Hockey goes from early October to about mid-June, which is about 8.5 months. Basketball is from LateOctober/Early November to mid June, which is 7.5 months. Baseball goes from Early April till about the end of October, which is 7 months. I think it is the 162 game schedule is what makes it seem longer...

Baseball, Basketball, Football, even Hockey all high to record attendance despite the high salaries and high ticket prices. I don't think anyone in any sport is complaining.

If we are being honest people dont care about baseball anymore. This years all star game was the least watched ever, last years world series also the least watched ever

Where as football in the past 5 years has broken the most watched superbowl record 3 times. All football games are also soldout, (except the Jaguars) whose fans have realized are moving so they have lost intrest. Its clear people care about the NFL the most

Yes I forgot about the lakers.. I don't think about Basketball that much. I'm mostly into Football and Baseball... I only like basketball when the Warriors are doing good so that's like never lol... so the Lakers slipped my mind... And I don't know about Basketball being marketed better.. Baseball is played on more stations than basketball and you hear about Baseball more than you do Basketball, but of course, like you pointed out Baseball is played all the time.. There is a baseball game going on every day unlike any other sport lol.. So you do hear about it more often. As far as marketing like products. I'm sure Basketball is probably doing better than Baseball, you don't see Baseball players in commercials, advertizing things like you do Basketball and Football players.. on the plus side, you also don't see hour long infomercials about why someone got traded.. lol...

Let's start off by saying "people don't care about baseball anymore" Complete understatement.. Yes, they dropped in ratings, but they still had good ratings... which means SOMEONE cares about baseball and you realize that even if one person cares about baseball you're wrong? Go to NY and tell a NY Yankee fan no one cares about Baseball.. See their reaction, I'm hoping you get socked in the face. lol. Also, not ALL football games are sold out. Believe me they're not. And also, there are baseball teams that still sell out. The Yankees still sell out. I think the Angels and Dodgers also sell out all the time... I'm thinking the Phillies probably sell out after they almost won the WS last year.. Texas Rangers... All 169 games probably doesn't sell out no.. but also compared to football, baseball plays alot more games than them. People can spend more money to go to 16 games rather than 169 games...

ALL teams in the NFL in 2009 sold out every game, except the following. The bills who sold out 4 games, the Chargers who sold out 6, and the Jaguars who sold out 2.. So there were 12 total games in the NFL out of a possible 256 were not sold out.

baseball has 162 games not 169

and since you mention the Yankees and they do have the most sellouts in basball

The attendance at the new Yankee Stadium dropped 13% during the ’09 season. The new stadium itself seats less people than the old stadium did. The Yankees high ticket prices had a big impact on it as well. They couldn’t forsee the economy going down like that, so it’s hard to really blame them. They lowered a bunch of the higher ticket prices for next year.

The Yankees had only seven sellouts this year, and drew a total of 3,719,358 million over the 81 home games during the regular season. The Yankees made the postseason this year, so they will be able to sell a ton more tickets to fans who are hungry for this playoff run. You can bank on them selling out every game during the postseason.

they had 7 sellouts in all of 2009, yeah they are doing great.. last year their attendance dropped 13%, while baseball as a whole dropped 6%

The Texas Rangers,Pittsburgh Pirates, and Florida Marlins are currently contemplating sales of the teams or filing for bankruptcy (which the Rangers have already filed for)

So the country as a whole doesn't care about baseball, and NFL is easily king

I saw plenty of Yankees games last year with a lot of empty seats. The Cowboys opened their stadium last season and didn't have a problem selling tickets.

Gee and 8 home games versus 81 home games. Can you for once, ONLY once bring something of relevence to the table and stop sucking on the jocks of the Cowboys? Damn.

Comparing attendance of the two are really stupid. The Yankees in 81 games drew over 3.5 million fans in one season. When the Cowboys can do that in ONE SEASON with their 8 games then we have something to talk about. Until then your comparison is like comparing a swamp in your back yard to the Pacific Ocean.

Wow, people dont care about baseball? Then why does the worst team in baseball draw over a million fans a year while the best teams draw over 4 million? Do the math. They draw over 70 million fans over the course of a season.

Different people love different sports. I love baseball. I don't see the point in arguing which is the national pastime until you define what standard you use to measure.

If attendance for the whole season is the measure, here is what happened the most recent completed seasons:

MLB 2009 had 73.40 million
NBA 2008/2009 had 21.55 million
NHL 2008/2009 had 21.48 million
NFL 2009/2010 had 17.47 million

I don't have the figures for NASCAR.

It doesn't have to do with "not caring". Several things impact attendance at baseball games. Most significant, the still struggling economy. Ticket prices in most cities are high, not to mention concessions costing a bunch of money.

I havent been to a game since 2008, because of circumstances, but usually I go to Philadelphia at least once a year to see Phillies V Braves. The last time I went down there, the friend I was with got us field box seats for $30 each. If I remember correctly, my food, cost me another $12, and this was only for myself. Thats 42 bucks for one game, for one person. Even if you sit in the lesser seats, its at least 15 bucks a seat, and most of the time more, in most cities. So, for a family of four to attend one game, even in mediocre to lousy seats, you are looking at $100 bucks for the evening, for four people to park, buy tickets, eat food, and buy souvineurs. That is a heavy burden for most familes, especially in this economy.

The number of games in the NFL doesn't help a lot of teams. There are plenty of teams in the NFL who can't sellout games. The comparison had more to do with the fact that both teams opened billion-dollar stadiums in a bad economy and faced questions about whether they could sell tickets to their stadiums. Tickets to Cowboys Stadium aren't cheap.

I think what you're saying is kind of what I've been trying to say. 8 home games compared to 81 home games... Baseball games don't sell out because there's so many games. Yeah there are people that can afford to go to every home game their favorite team plays, but not everyone. 8 home games, even though cost alot of money for the Cowboys tickets, is probably less than going to 81 Yankee games. People can't go to every baseball game so they don't sell out. It's cheaper to watch them at home... and the rating system kind of sucks. Not EVERYONE watching is recorded. You need something attached to your tv to accurately record ratings and not everyone has that. So it's just not accurate.

When a baseball game becomes the most-watched show in the history of television you'll have an argument. Football is king.
