I have a friend that’s a Mid-Eastern scholar. He says he has been
working for years preserving and interpreting ancient scrolls.
Many of the scrolls deal with mundane household accounts
and inventories but he said a certain number of the scrolls
are classified as lewd.
He says the lewd scrolls are set aside. He said that due to religious
sensitivity these scrolls are not studied other than to preserve and
number them.
They mainly touch on sexual themes or are lewd letters or writings.
“ Lewd “ meaning not appropriate for publishing the traslations.
He was telling me about one that was from an old Roman Camp at
Dura-Europos.. The Roman Cohors” XX Palmyrenorum occupied
the city.
One scroll was about registering prostitutes, in the camp, and one
particular girl named “Helvia” was a Cilician, she was tall, 5'10
or( 5'7 by modern standards), fair skinned, and of the Egyptian habit.
( he said this meant probably the straight beaded hair, eyes blackened
by khol, rouge on her lips and henna on her finger and toenails, making
them rose colored). She was registered as a “ Meretrix” (a more expensive
and better class of girl).
She was also well known for “ fellatio” and a type of coupling while
suspended from a basket.
A latter scroll, from the same time period, mentions a civil suit brought
by a “ Helvia” against another prostitute by the name of Parvaneh or
( Parvehea).
The suit mentions “ Helvia” was set upon by retainers of “ Parvaneh”.
The retainers lashed “Helvia’s” wrists to her ankles and suspended
her from a pole, in a public place.
Then , in a manner, they brushed her palms and soles with rippened
ears of “ kemmer”.
“ Helvias “ cries brought some soldiers who freed her.
She was suing for the public humiliation.
Sounds like a good old fashion tickling to me.
