IRVING (April 11, 2010)—Texas Stadium, the longtime home of the Dallas Cowboys came tumbling down Sunday morning in a planned demolition that an 11-year-old boy who won an essay contest set off.

After about six months of planning, it took only seconds for more than a ton of dynamite to turn the concrete and steel stadium into a twisted mess.

Dykon Explosive Demolition said the implosion involved a succession of 55 blasts time to go off a half-second apart.

Casey Rogers of Terrell got to set off the controlled explosion after winning a contest sponsored by Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that centered on children who make a difference their communities.

He created an effort called Casey’s Heart, which provides food and clothing to the homeless.

The Cowboys moved from Texas Stadium in Irving to the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington after the 2008 season.

They won all five of their Super Bowl titles while playing under the Texas Stadium dome, with the giant hole, which, as local legend has it, was included in the stadium’s design so God could watch His team.

Irving city leaders decided they needed the land more than the building, so they decided to demolish the stadium famous for its hole in the roof.

The cleanup is expected to take until July to complete.

The state already has a 10-year lease to use the property as a staging area for a highway construction project.

A part of me wanted to cry, when the Stadium crashed to the ground. I mean look at all the great players and coach took to the field. I watched it today, and heard people shouting and cheering when the stadium imploded, like the stadium meant nothing to them.

Oh sure we have that mega-billion dollar structure in Arlington now, but it lacks the charm of the original.

Look at it this way ; the stadium may be gone but the memories will last forever .

I felt the same way about Arlington stadium; it was just really a AAA ballpark but I saw 100`s of Rangers games there including Nolan Ryan`s 5000 strikeout.

I don`t know if you have been to the new Cowboys Stadium but it is freakin amazing !!
