Well, somebody oughta to do it. After all, they are the band that fans of a certain subgenre of rock have been wetting themselves with excitement over for the last month or two! Any thoughts on these big nosed, polka dotted, math rocking muthahumpas?

Rick Beato covered them on his YouTube channel. I know they are something I said well I followe KEXP on YouTube and when I was doing the looking for new music thing every 5 weeks or so I always go to the Hot 100 and find mostly nothing, but then see these guys on the recommended videos and I'm like wtf? So sure I clicked on it. Interesting. Don't know that I will listen to them a lot of times. To me not catchy. Catchy I listen to a lot. I don't have a care about what music genre. If it's good it's good. They're not bad. Just not catchy.

That's my take.

Is it technically intriguing? Sure.

But it's looper music. The danger is, if you don't have some degree of suspense or "dropping the beat", people (and maybe even the composer) may fall asleep to it.

If you're not creating a soundscape that can compress and expand, it eventually creates noise.

The microtonal angle is cool, however, it points to an issue: how many regular Joe's with instruments not tuned microtonally could create a replica 3/4 the qualities of the original?

I've met musicians that wouldn't know microtones from their best efforts to cover songs.

The outfits are the biggest catch to me. They're awesome

Thanks for the replies so far.

Funnily enough, the outfits were what put me off listening to them initially. Just seemed overly kitsch. Then I gave 'em a go and because I liked the music, the aesthetics grew on me I suppose. I do agree, however, that because of the way the music is structured, they're kind of limited in terms of what they can do and what they can make the listener feel. Could get boring if you were listening to a whole album of it. But I think when it works well, it's great - at least for me anyway. Love Fabienk, especially the second half of it. Just makes me wanna dance around like a goddam loony!

I'm not a musician so your reply means nothing to me lol, but I have had musicians in my family in recent generations and I listened to Rick Beato's if you can tell these apart you are able to understand music and I could.

But in a more simplistic way this band is interesting as we all agree, but it's not Toto's Africa, Gotye's Somebody that I Used to Know, or Bill Monroe's Blue Moon of Kentucky so I heard it once made a note of it as I've been doing now for more than 10 years, but will I ever go back to them? Probably not.
