How do you best cope with your mental illness (if you identify it that way)?

I hope that this post doesn't bring any negativity, as I am just looking for advice. I struggle with both anxiety and depression and I have for a long time. I'm currently going trough a depressive episode that I just can't shake. For 10ish years now, I've been seeing a psychiatrist and I'm on meds that help. I also see a therapist weekly. which also helps. Talking about my mental illnesses is difficult for me since there are a lot of feelings surrounding it, but I was curious what you have found that helps. Thanks in advance.

I speak with my therapist Erica, I also play retro video games, use creative haven coloring books with colored pencils, I listen to music from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s and I build model cars. I try my best to keep my mind occupied. I’ve been taking Sertraline 150mg I also struggle with PTSD, depression and anxiety.

I certainly hope you find something that works best for you. Feel free to leave me a message if you’d like. BIG HUGS 🥰

Talking to people as much as possible, especially when you don't want to. It can be tough, but you kind of need to force yourself. I guess you can think of the old saying "Misery loves company". It helps so much just to be around other people and interacting with them. It takes my mind of dwelling on negative thoughts and I also genuinely feel the endorphine rush of having fun with people.

Sunlight is also pretty important. Getting out as often as you can. I live in Ireland, so the sun isn't something we actually get much of over here, but I try and go for walks out in the air as much as possible. I listen to books on my phone as I walk, as it kind of helps me zone out of everything. But it's also nice to walk out somewhere quiet listening to the nature around me.

And meditation also really helps me. There's an app called Insight Timer that apart from having various talks on mental health, it also has a timer that you can customise and have play while you relax. For example, I have it play the sound of waves breaking on the shore, as I find that really relaxing.

Finally, I have tried to getting out to shows and gigs more and more. From above, being around people can make me feel great and if it's a good show, it's wonderful and I feel refreshed from it.

As a slight aside, @luvgirlsfeet, do you listen to Postmodern Jukebox at all? If you like listening to music from the 50's to 80's, they play modern songs, but in old styles. And if you get to see them live, it's incredible!

No i haven't I don't believe I've heard of them before. I'll check it out thank you

I agree that walking outside in nature and/or just around your home helps mood tremendously, as well as helping the body fight all sorts of diseases. Exercise, dancing inside helps too, but combined with sunlight and/or fresh air, there are additional benefits. Nature heals.

Avoiding ultra-processed foods also greatly helps mind & body. This may help a little if you eat or drink too many, as I do…

I've been untreated. But in general I watch motivational videos and work/ sleep. Work is kind of toxic lately so it's kind of sucked the joy out of gaming for me.

A lot of people suffer from it Butterfly so your definately not alone in dealing with it. I take meds to handle it and it's usually enough for now. I have a feeling when my Mom passes away I'm going to seriously need to to up the dosage. Hoping that's not for at least ten more year or so. 🙁

A variety of ways help. Medication that works with your system the best, Mindfullness exercises, Music, Comfort items and Media. Social Media can cause mental anguish thus, I say be very eager with the block button if you see something upsetting or irritating. Therapy can also help, but its not always easy to find a therapist. Peer Support can help if that's something you have in your local area, local groups for activities (Like sewing, hand crafts or games)

I channel my negativity into writing post apocalyptic dystopia and horror. That said I am very pessimistic about the world and life in general and I don't really see that ever changing. I have chronic health problems, I'mtransgender, autistic, pretty much in a state of chronic anxiety and I live in a country where those things are largely despised.

I'd be down to read some of your writing to be honest.

Ask me in private and I will send you to a link, I try to keep my fetish writing separate from my real life serious writing I guess you would say, that's the idea behind pseudonyms! Although to be fair my pseudonyms for fetish stuff are more popular than the stuff I write under my own name.

Medication has helped me. Losing my Dad destroyed me to my core and I'm not close to repairing it yet. i'm self aware enough to know i may not ever be able to fully, but it doesn't stop me from trying my best to get through day after day. You're absolutely not alone. Please don't ever feel alone.

I try and get into some sort of routine,

get dressed
open curtains
go for nice walk or run
eat food

I've been booze free since October, which has made things different

positive in that it's better for my health, but I'm also a lot shy and quieter in social settings.

I like to write too, nothing heavy, just random stuff about everyday things, it can be quite cathartic
