I recently proved that I am able to live without it 😛

However, it is still my favorite social network 😉 And I owe it my career, cause there is no way my English would be this good without it :blaugh: It also did wonders in matters of friendship, self-acceptance, and creativity. I love this place~

I suppose that I am the biggest addict, at least with regard to making posts. 😛
But I have cut down lately from about 70 posts per day to about 40. 😀

Love to hear it! Is your first language Chinese then or something else?

You know, Mils, I've always wondered: did you make a conscious choice of being the user with the most posts, or did it just happen like that?

Where do you find the time and energy to type so much (and you wrote many excellent stories, not just posts), and still maintain a job, go watch the Dodgers and take care of your loved ones? What drives you to devote so much to the community?

Hope you don't find me too nosy, but I am curious

I learned to speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese over the 10 years I have spent here, but my first language is French. I was born in the Southwest of France, and moved to China a bit before my 24th birthday. Met the love of my life in Beijing and we got married in 2017, after dating for some 7 years.

The thing about the TMF is that it is SO American :usa: I jokingly refer to it as the "star-spangled forum". I learned a lot of new words, grammar, even American values, historical tidbits and mindset just by reading posts here, "eavesdropping", sort of, on how native speakers address each other. My literary English improved a great deal too by reading stories, at first painstakingly "deciphering" them, then reading them just as fast as I would read French, and ending up being able to distinguish the good ones from the exquisite. I think I became fluent around the age of 21, something like that.

I think Jeff is probably fed up with hearing that, cause I say it all the time, but I really owe this place my career. French people usually speak terrible English and write it even worse. Not me though, and I found out that, as I was applying for interesting jobs, my fluency in the language often became a strong - if not a deciding - factor for the success of my application. And in general, it makes life easier.

I didn't learn all the English I know only from here, mind you. I started in school like everybody else, and I have family in Canada where I lived for a short time (and from where I had unforgettable trips over the southern border; LOVE the US, definitely my 2nd favorite country~). I also have a fondness for British literature, films and television. But it is undoubtedly here on the TMF that I became fluent. And because of this, it will always have a special place in my heart :bubbleheart:

I still make mistakes all the time though 😛

Hopz you don't find me to nosy, but I am curious

When I joined the TMF, at age 52, I had no computer at home and didn't post much, being unwilling to post from work, only from internet cafes. My job at Fordham University did not require me to work in the evenings. About five days out of seven I would spend the evening watching TV. I wrote and posted my first few stories (both fiction and non-fiction) from internet cafes. Having a place to post my stories was the major reason that I had joined. I was pleased and astonished, as a new member, to win the 2002 Golden Feather Award for Best Non-fiction Story of the year for Double Trouble.

That success inspired me to buy my first laptop so that I could post every day. Having bought one at age 53, I then made a conscious decision to become the person with the most posts. It was then BigJim with 3,000+ posts if memory serves. This massive increase in posting in no way affected my job or my social life. All it did was replace about 25 hours per week of watching TV with an equal time posting on the TMF.

Wow! Thanks for this! :ty:

It's really nice of you to take the time to talk to us in such great detail about your history~ Honestly I don't think you missed much by watching less television 😀

Hahaha, thanks  But you wouldn't say that if you heard me speaking because no matter how hard I tried, I never managed to completely get rid of my accent 😀

Voice actor, that sounds like a terrific job :bow2: Difficult, but I imagine very interesting.

I did a few voice-overs for TV documentaries myself; it was quite a pleasant experience~ I cannot act to save my life though: I am this kind of person who's completely unable to fake an emotion and whose feelings become immediately visible. Also a terrible poker player :blaugh:
