Ok, before any of you Pats fans start crying here, I'll let you know that this post comes from a Pats fan. Ask Ray how SBG1 was after the Pats won the upset victory over the Rams in XXXVI. Or ask anyone in my house about the decibel level in the almost-overtime victory in XXXVIII.

AND, what is to follow is not conjecture, but fact. I've scoured the stats on NFL.com and have been taping the Pats games since Week 3. (Hey, I live in New England...every televised game on CBS is a Pats game).

The New England Patriots get at least one holding penalty when an opponent is inside the red-zone...63% of the time. The Home-Field NFL average? 24.7%.

Opponents' holding penalties against the Pats outside the red zone? 14.3%. The league average? 21.9%.

Opponents' "offensive interferance" penalties on passing plays of 15 or more yards against the Pats...19%. League average - 4.5%.

Facemask penalties against Pats opponents at Gillette Stadium - an average of 1 every 11 plays. League average - 1 every 34 plays.

Pass interferance penalties against the Pats' opposition - 18% of all passing plays. Pass interferance calls against the Patriots - .9% of all passing plays.

Penalties negating touchdowns against the Patriots - 17% of all TD's scored against them. Penalties negating Patriots' touchdowns - 1.9%

These are just the stats I could get numerics on. Am I the only one noticing something here? Now, I'm not saying the Pats aren't a great team, because they are. But is the NFL that obsessed with proving that a dynasty can happen in the post-free agency/salary cap era? I'm not accusing anyone of "fixing" games, because I know that it would ruin the sport if it ever came out....but this is a little weird, no?

Just once, I'd like to see the Pats kick the shit out of someone with NO penalties deciding a score. It would be a refreshing change of pace.

The happiest day of the football season was when the Steelers beat the crap out of them and broke their so-called record. I think they get way too many breaks cut for them because they're the champions. I can't wait for postseason and hope they are NOT at the super bowl. It's about time for some new blood in there anyway.

and to think I used to say the same things about the Dallas Cowboys...🙄

LOL

So called or not, it is a record. 😀

Ray

Funny you should bring that up, Ray. After going back about ten years in the stats (Yes, I have that little in my life!) the Dallas Cowboys had very similar stats regarding penalties from '91-'95.

I can only hope that the Pats have to play Pittsburgh or San Diego as an away game, or the Super Bowl will be practically handed to New England so the "dynasty" revenue can continue to flow.

😎

Yeah, but it's a record discontinued, and that makes me happy. I'm sick of looking at them. But don't worry, they're in good company along with TO and the Eagles. I think the Steelers with take them both again. This is a shocking revelation from a Cleveland fan, but my team sucks boulders and have no competition left in them. I have to ride on the Steelers' wagon until times get better.

Waaaa! Waaaah! Or as they say in the supermarkets.. "clean up in the infants section". 2 out of the last 3 years, superbowl champions. Whether you like it.. or don't like it.. they're the best going today. Deal with it.

Good Work Dave!

Dave you put a lot of work in this thread! Those stats are too hard to ignore! Im a NY Jets fan and I dont like the Pats but Dave I think you should take your post and send it to like the NFL office or something. It would be a crime not to! You seem way smarter than a dumbass like me, dont you know of an office or authority who will take a look at your work? The NFL is trying to make a dynasty out of this team and its being built on a foundation of yellow flags! Dave I beg you...save us!!!!

it's easy to be the best time in the league when you have the easiest schedule...anybody remember when the superbowl teams (the winner and the loser) had the two toughest schedules the following season?? now they just seem to hand the trophy out like it's bubblegum...well maybe with charlie weiss leaving the Pats after the season..this'll be their last title for awhile.

It's my rant and I'll bellyache if I want to.

Down with the Pats!

Anyone but the Pats at the superbowl!

Jinx, jinx, hex, hex!

Now go and clean that up in isle 5😛

Sorry Kis, I don't clean up other people's messes. BUT I do think I will take a trip to the dairy section to get some cheese to go with all this.. 😀

Fantastic work Dave! I loooovveee stats! From more of a just observational view the Patriot do seem to get away with more pass interference then anyone in the league except Baltimore...but I digress. The other thing that bothers me about NFL officiating is the selectiveness of the calls. As you pointed out the nuber of calls on "big plays" easily outweighs the calls on every other play. Why? Are the officials paying more attention then? That's always bothered me!

And as a side note, since someone mentioned Baltimore 🙂rolleyes: ) If you had a tape of the last three seasons everytime Ray (I didn't see anything, charge me , wait, maybe I did see something) Lewis had one of those big hits that the announcers love to ooh and aah about...I bet my weekly salary that at least 60% of the time the guy getting hit doesn't have the ball, is in a vulnerable postion, or is away from the play. Then big, bad Ray flexes cause he hit some guy who didn't see it coming.

Yeah, I don't like him.

I personally am happy to see another chick with a memory. The Pats are spoiled in the NFL and I would like to see someone else at the SB this time around. You know, someone else more deserving.....🙂

yeah me too, but i don't think it'll happen unless they get their butts handed to them by pittsburgh or indy in the AFC title game

Huge Raiders fan here (waits for laughter to die down) anyone remember the snow bowl????
I sure do, what i remember is my boi #24 Charles Woodson knock the god damn ball lose. Gee no one could of held onto tha ball wid a hit like dat.
But no out comes the officals and TAKE that super bowl away from Oakland, it was ours to win.
But hey there is always next year and i cant see anyone beatin tha eagles this year.
