AP: Dodgers Dont Have Cash To Meet May 31 Payroll

I just read an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, which stated that, supposedly, a major league official claims that the Los Angeles Dodgers do not have the cash to meet their May 31 payroll obligations. The source claims that the Dodgers need $8.25 million to meet the payment, and do not have it. However, if the team cannot make the payroll, MLB has said they will step in, and make the payment.

A situation like this shows the complete insanity of the salaries of professional athletes. Ticket, and concession, prices at major league parks are outrageous. What would be if some of these guys tried to live on.. twenty, thirty, or forty, thousand.. or less. like some families of four.. or five.. in this country have to.

I personally think baseball needs a salary cap, to prevent the insane escalation of salaries.

The insane person is Frank McCourt, the owner, who refuses to face the reality that his divorce has made him insolvent, and the only way he can extricate himself from the impossible financial hole he is in is to sell the Dodgers.

Thanks for the link, mils. I've heard the Mccourts are in the middle of a nasty divorce. I agree with you that if Mr Mccourt is insolvent, he should definitely sell the team.

Frank McCourt is a consummate buffoon, as well as a liar. It's a shame that in the world of sports you have to suffer from owners.

I don't know too much about McCourt, Knox, but, as we know, the Yankees suffered from George Steinbrenner's crazed antics from 1973, until he eased off, following Joe Torre being hired as manager in 1995. I believe the Yankees had something like twenty managerial changes between 1973 and 1996, including the five tenures of Billy Martin, and the two of Lou Pinella.

Hopefully, Mccourt can get things ironed out.

I read today that if the Dodgers don't get their act together by the end of May, Dodgers players can become free agents. Now, I'm sure the MLB will not let this happen, but let's just delve into hypothetical fantasy for a minute.

This means that Ethier, Kemp, Kershaw, Billingsley and others become available to any of the 29 other teams willing to pay them. What sort of crazy bidding war would this result in? The Yankees would give Kershaw a billion dollars to stabilize their rotation, and Ethier and Kemp would be sought after by every team, regardless of their outfield.

Craziness.

Frank McCourt spent team money on an extravgent lifestyle, refuses to spend for needed players and dosent seem to understand that all of LA wants him gone. The sooner Bud Selig can boot him, the better.

That's a different topic entirely. You are welcome to start a thread about what a bad job Bud Selig has done as Commissioner of MLB. As of now, he is actually the Commissioner and thus he is the one who needs to get rid of McCourt ASAP.

You make it sound like its easy to boot McCourt , its not . Trust me on this . I just recently went through this with the Rangers and Tom Hicks . I'm sure McCourt is just like Hicks in that he wants to try to rip off the new owner and make a huge profit on his investment .
