January 27, 1967. Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom and Ed White, the first American to walk in space, died when a fire swept the command module during routine testing. I remember this horrible day well, almost like it was yesterday. RIP. 🙁

Interesting story here of how the star names Dnoces, Navi and Regor commemorate the three astronauts lost in this tragedy, touching on how the Apollo program used stars in navigation just like the seafarers of old.

But these honorable yet ad hoc appellations apparently have about as much as astronomical imprimatur as any you can buy from Rocky Mosele:

As alluded to briefly in the article linked to by the OP, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida has now put on public display the still fire-damaged three-part hatch assembly of the capsule. What a sad, eerie artifact:

The margin for error in the space program was so small I am surprised that anyone survived. The program's accomplishments are such a testament to everyone involved at all levels.
