At The Movies

Dark Shadows. I liked it in parts. Depp made me smile, but this is quite old material for Burton, and the narrative is a bit of a mess. The Vicky character goes missing for large chunks of the film, after we get a long intro based around her finding the Collins family.

It all felt a bit obvious coming from this director, and his visual style has never really evolved from Edward Scissorhands, although I did enjoy Sleepy Hollow. This is not nearly as good.

Yeah, I watched it for the humor and nothing else. It wasn't dark and scary like the old series. It was light hearted and entertaining. Aside from Burton's Sleepy Hollow this is a film Burton actually did right (unlike so many other colossal disasters coughNightmareBeforeChristmascough)!

Sleepy Hollow eh? One of the few gothic horror movies I happen to like (aside from Brahm Stroker's Dracula). Scary but decent plot plus the bad guys get defeated (PERMANENTLY) and the good people get happy endings. Also, I gotta say, the scene where the headless horseman sword fights Ichabod Crane AND Ichabod's best friend (at the SAME TIME) and ends up kicking their behinds was freaking cool! Also, the scenery, costumes, and even the towns/backgrounds where very realistic and very historically accurate (at least to me).

I went in with extremely high hopes for The Conjuring considering all the praise I seen and heard from friends, facebook, reviews, and other media. And I was extremely let down by a predictable premise and lack luster jump scares. The atmosphere was really the only thing the film had going for it. Don't believe in all the hype of this film.

Beckers, I love ya, you know that, but you've seen that before too many times {the plot}. We're not being tested at the movies anymore. You're not going to see anything like The Exorcist again. It's been done, and it's not going to get any better in that genre. This is one I just remembered that remained pretty obscure but the teenagers loved it at the time. I've just been recently turned onto it myself. I think that it's fantastic. Pump Up The Volume with a young Christian Slater. I"m Going to place 2 songs on here and I hope that you will listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBQYWCw8n_k and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1ZQ9ZB-908.

I both agree and disagree, yes it's hard to really come up with a unique premise with all the recycled hash that's been done over and over again. But there are films that put a unique spin on old tales. Insidious comes to mind in that it was the last horror film that scared me. And the songs are lurvely 🙂

Eh, scary films to me are all the same. Now, if the film has some sort of decent plot instead of just relying on the "scream/fright factor" then I'm game for seeing it. But movies like Saw and shit just don't seem to be worth my time. All they do is want to make you scared and while that can be good for a 30 to 45 minute episode it's basically a one-trick pony when you end up prolonging it for 2 long hard to endure hours.

Many will disagree violently with me, but I loved Blair Witch Project. Say what you will about the acting or lack thereof, but that was part of its charm- they came across as real people rather than actors. It actually did seem real at the time I watched it- and it also had the factor that Hitchcock identified as most frightening in much of his work, which is that you NEVER actually see the evil thing that is after you- it is all suggested/ heard/ you see the effect it has rather than the thing itself. What made ALIEN so effective was the "barely glimpsing the monster" factor as well. I try to watch both of those every October. (Also Young Frankenstein. "BLUCHER!")

THE CHILDREN: Scary as hell, cause well...children in movies are scary, no matter if it's a horror movie or a straight up family comedy xD

SINISTER: Puts a whole new spin on the "Lost Tapes" genre. Gave me chills when I saw the ending. Not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but if you don't want nightmares for a week about killer children or a recently unknown Deity chasing after you, don't watch this movie!

BREATHING ROOM: Not a bad movie, but it is really slow and boring at times....but the twist at the end will leave you breathless (yes, I realize how corny that sounded and I don't give a shit xD)

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT: An okay horror film based on the evils of Christmas.. and a horrific childhood experience of a killer Santa Claus killing your father, then attempting to rape your mother before killing her when you're in the backseat, squirming your way and running off into the distance..then 20 years later, be placed in a Santa Claus costume at a toy store where you work and then seeing your "true love" being raped by a cocky co-worker which causes you to go insane and kill all the people you run into who you think of to being "Naughty"....you know...that old Chesnutt xD
