I just got in front of the computer, and was shocked to learn that the Atlanta Braves have given Hall of Fame Pitcher Tom Glavine his unconditional release. Glavine has won 305 games in the major leagues, including 244 for the Braves, and as most baseball fans know, he was rehabbing from shoulder surgery, had been pitching well, and was supposed to join the Braves this week. The "house men" line given by the Braves is that Glavine's presence on the roster was impeding the arrival of top pitching prospect Tommy Hanson.

My question is, if the Braves were going to release Glavine, why did they sign him in the first place? They should at least have let Glavine pitch a few games, before making this decision.

Terrible, classless move, Braves! First John Smoltz earlier this year, and now Tom Glavine.

I hope Glavine catches on with someone else for the rest of the year. Maybe he can go back to the Mets. After the way the Braves treated him, Glavine should, when the time comes, wear a Mets cap when he goes into the Hall of Fame.

If anyone has a link to the story of Glavine's release, and could post it, it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the link, McNoodle. I'm still trying to digest this.

I think that Glavine should go one of two places, either back to the Mets, if they'll have him, or to the Red Sox. As we know, Smoltz is with the Sox, and what better place for the two Hall of Fame best friends to finish their career, than with the same team. Glavine is also from Boston, and can be near his family there.

I'm waiting to see what Bobby Cox and the players will have to say about this.

Awful!

granted he deserved better than this, but the great franchises will always get rid of someone a year too early rather than a year too late

I say he needs to go to Washington, we need all the help we can get in our pitching staff and getting a vet like Glavine could help us in spades.

I love Tom Glavine, he is a shoe in in the Hall but you gotta realize time is running out for him. I would have kept him on this year as a presence in the clubhouse regardless though. A good friend of mine hit a homerun against him in the minors this year on a 76 mph fastball so its tough. I would still love to see him go out and shove it though!!

Obviously you are not sure what happened here. It had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with getting rid of him a year earlier as oppose to a year late. He was rehabbing. He did a good job rehabbing and declared himself fit to return to the roster. If he was added to the roster he was due $1,000,000. This was MONEY motivated.

But funny, they made sure they had him make a rehab start in their minor league system so they could get a sellout. You really think this is a year early to a year late, you don't know what you are talking about if you do. This was DEFINATELY money motivated.

4u, I agree with you. The Braves just spent money to get Nate Mcclouth for Center Field, after they sent the rookie Jordan Schaffer back to the minors. The Glavine release was definitely done with money in mind.

I blog with the sportswriters and fans on the Atlanta Journal Constitution.com website, and fan reaction seems to be mixed thus far. Some people think that the Braves gave Glavine more than enough time to rehab, and that the team needed to move on, from an injured 43 year old pitcher. Other people said that Tom deserved more time, and at least one major league start, before the Braves cut him. I agree with the latter scenario. After all that Tom Glavine has meant to the Braves, the city of Atlanta, the Braves fans, and major league baseball as a whole, I think he deserved at least one major league start, even if he got hammered, just to be allowed the chance to prove himself as a major leaguer for the last time.

Tom has said he wants to catch on with someone. Maybe he will show the Mets enough to re sign him for the rest of this year. Tom is from Boston, and, as baseball fans know, his best friend John Smoltz is rehabbing to come back to the Sox. What a story that would be, if Glavine joined the Red Sox, and, along with Smoltz, helped the Sox win another World Series. Wouldnt that be a fitting ending.

I hope that Tom shows a major league team that he has enough left, so that someone will sign him. With the long, illustrious career that Tom has had, he deserves to pitch his last game on a major league field, even if he gets lit up, as opposed to having his final game, be with a group of minor leaguers, at Braves extended spring training.

Well, unless you're talking about the Panthers. We're gonna have Delhomme until he dies. 🙁
