Atlanta Hawks Coach Mike Woodson Fired

The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting this morning that Hawks head coach Mike Woodson has been let go by the team. The Hawks, while they improved from 13 wins in Woodson's first season, to 53 this past season, suffered a four game humilation blowout sweep against the Orlando Magic this past week, which led to the team deciding not to renew Woodson's contract.

I feel mixed about this. While I understand the team's disappointment with not advancing further in the playoffs, it seems to me that if a guy's record improves every year he is coach or manager, why should he be let go?

I'm not sure fired is the exact correct term since his contract expired & they decided not to renew it. I always thought firing was defined as having unfinished work or time left on your contract, but I could be wrong.

However, I didn't like the fact that the Hawks got blown out in the series (just like the Cavaliers quit on Mike Brown). That couldn't have been good for the coach. A shocking, embarrassing result is sure to roll at least one head.

Woodson is gone not because of just losing in the playoffs. It is HOW they lost in the playoffs. Last year, they stood there while Lebron James destroyed them. I mean, they didn't even guard him.

This year, they got completely humiliated and destroyed by the Orlando Magic. Like Barkley said, it is hard to lose each game by 20 points. That series was like an exhibition for the Magic. I have never seen a team lay down like the Hawks did before. That is why Woodson was let go...

ticklingmaster, I see your point about the word "Fired". I guess to me, a guy who has been the coach of a team who isn't retained, even through lack of contract renewal, is a technical "firing".

The Hawks did get blown out in the Magic series. They played terrible.

Prime, I understand what you said about Woodson being let go because of how the Hawks lost.

By the way, Good Luck to the Lakers in the conference finals. You guys just might have home court in the Finals, if Boston can get by Orlando. I think the Magic-Celtics series has the potential to be a very good and interesting series.
