I don't have a link, but I just read one of the funnier things that I've seen in a while. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.. Atlanta Hawks Forward Josh Smith has been fined $25,000, for quote, "making an "obscene gesture" toward the New York Knicks bench during Friday night's Knicks/Hawks game. Supposedly, Smith leaped into the air, and, while looking directly at the Knicks bench, Mr Smith grabbed his crotch.

If anyone else has a link to this, and could post it, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thoughts on this?

I love how players do repulsive things when they are supposed to be setting examples for the fans who look up to them. The worst part is, what's 25k to a guy making multi-millions? Lesson learned....doubt it.

Why should they be setting an example? That's what parents are for.

People in the spotlight are looked up to by young kids. They should conduct themselves profesionally. So would it be cool for the President to grab his crotch? Besides, how is a parent supposed to convince their kids that it's wrong to grab your balls in public if they see adult professional athletes getting away with it? Kids emulate the players they look up to.

It's unfortunate that parents can't convince a child they have many hours per day 365 days a year to act differently than someone on tv they say once every week at the most.

That's the beauty of sponsorships and capitalism, if you don't like the player or think he's a bad influence, you don't have to watch or buy things they endorse.Or not vote them for President. When it comes down to it, children take after their parents unless the parenting is so far gone that they take after celebrities.... which then meh, they're lost causes

I see the point about it not being cool for an athlete to grab his crotch, because children look up to these guys.

I remember reading an article some years back, about an incident where recent Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Bert Blyleven, was booed by Minnesota Twins fans, who were unhappy at his perspective free agency. In his last game as a Twin, the first time he was with the club, as he had two stints with them, Blyleven was chased off the field with chants of "Bye, Bye Bertie", and responded to the heckling, by giving the booing crowd, the most famous gesture of all, the good old middle finger. I don't recall whether Blyleven was fined, or suspended, for the incident or not.

One of the members mentioned athletes setting examples for kids. Honestly, with as overpaid and spoiled as most athletes are nowadays, and with their battling over money, tendency to do bad off the field things, like drugs, etc, I don't think the athlete of today is as iconed as he was.. say.. 50 years ago.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this is how I see it.

Dr Vollin, I just saw a picture of what House did. I wasn't even aware of his "gesture" until you posted it here.

I guess this weekend was "crotch" weekend in the NBA, lol. These guys have to learn to keep their hands out of certain areas of their bodies, lol.

According to the Miami Herald, Eddie House made essentially the same gesture in a game on Friday night, as the one he was fined for in yesterday's game, with his hands near his crotch. However, the NBA stated that House was fined for only the Sunday gesture.

Maybe we will have a new phenomenon in the NBA: Self crotch grabbing. Most of these guys make so much money every year, that 25K is nothing to them. It will be interesting to see if House and Smith's actions were just two isolated incidents, or if this becomes a new wave, lol.

What is going on with crotch grabbing this week? I just read in a newspaper article that Minnesota Vikings Defensive End Everson Griffin, was arrested, and tasered, on Monday, for allegedly grabbing the crotch of a police officer, during a routine traffic stop. Luckily for Mr Griffin, he will not have felony charges filed against him, but may face misdemeanor charges.

Real intelligent: Grabbing a cop's crotch for a routine traffic violation. Moron!
