Bad joke backfires

From today's news on the local radio: A passenger checked in at Munich airport for his flight to London. At the security check, he was asked about the contents of his suitcase, and he tried to be funny: "I don't know, perhaps a bomb..."

Within seconds, he was surrounded by BGS forces (Federal Border Police), arrested and questioned. He admitted his joke at once, but the police didn't share his kind of humor. Because he had a clean police record and a steady address here in Munich, he was released in time to catch his plane. But here comes the clue: The pilot refused to have him aboard, as he considered that passenger a possible security risk!

The passenger is going to face an indictment because of "pretending a crime" and "endangering air traffic".

Folks, never joke about bombs at an airport! It's not only not funny, but it can have serious consequences for you.

It all comes down to the old question of at what point does a "joke" cross the line between "protected speech" and "reckless endangerment".

It's against the law to yell "Fire!" in a crowded movie house, but it's OK to yell "Movie!" in a crowded fire house...

Having flown round trip last weekend from New York City's JFK airport to Rochester, I can tell you that the security checkpoints in both places had large signs which said, among other things, not to make any jokes about security matters, and that all statements would be taken to be serious.

That is a very reasonable attitude, given past history.

He deserved what he got and will deserve what he gets. No room for bomb humor anywhere! Especially at an airport. What's his kid gonna do (if he has a child), say he has a bomb for show and tell at school?
