This is just a silly slice of my life here, a pointless and meaningless little thing I saw, that yet, considering our time & place in the universe, is in it's own way kind of startling.
So I'm sitting in a local bookstore's coffeeshop, working on a script that I will never finish because I am lazy & unfocused. A few tables down from me are 3 collage-age Muslim women (probably from SMU - Go Mustangs!). One is very Americanized; two not so. In fact, two of them are wearing their headscarves (the more looser fabric that is an actual scarf, not the full-on Tusken Raider hajib wrap that is held together by clips). I know what you are thinking, Southern Methodist University has become Southern Muslim University; I can't explain it either, but it's cool because the initials still work.
Well, apparently what they were studying was pretty intense, because the more they worked on & discussed these problems, they'd pull the scarves away from their hair - kind of like some guy might yank on his tie, pulling it lower and loosening the knot while he's trying to get Apollo 13 down to earth. Eventually, one of these dames gets her scarf more than halfway down, and the other has hers all the way off.
I'm seeing this and thinking:
A.) Aren't they not supposed to be doing this? Like, there's no in-between in their rule book, right - either wear the scarf or don't, but if you don't, LOOK OUT?? The whole "what would the neighbors think", issue. Rebels!
B.) Since this was a very rare an unusual glimpse (in public, no less!) into something that I'm not supposed to be seeing ... it was kind of hot.
You are welcome to your God and freedom. THIS is what my troops are fighting for! Topless tan women with graceful noses to conduct themselves in public as they please as an unknowing part of my life, liberty & persuit of happiness secret cinema.
That's all I've got.
