Very recently i've been pining for a game which I regretfully sold at an EBgames. a long time ago. So to my surprise when I returned the same store, it was gone. I thought I had lost it forever until I went to the local shopping mall and discovered another EBgames store. And I found that game for no less than 3.98$, which to me was a crime cause this game is worth it's weight in gold.
That game is Serious Sam for the Xbox and here's the classic review.
This is probably one of the best, intense, gunslinging FPS that came out on the xbox which happened to be a port of the PC game. It's also a cult treasure since everyone else was into Halo, which was a good game too, but not to compare to Serious Sam.
This game boast all of the PC games, jampacked into one awesomely package. Complete with 36 levels of huge battlefield envrionments. A slew of tried and true weapons and new fun weapons for mass death. And of course the only game in FPS history for its time to include over 10,000 enemies to slaughter throughout the whole game.
The Story goes that around 2107 Earth is under attack by the forces of an evil known as mental. And the hero, Sam Serious Stone has to go back in time to unlock the secrets of the past to save the future, and make a lot of hilarious one liners.
The graphics in the game are well...dated. Then again this is a pretty old game by now, at least 10 years or more. I forget. But you'll barely give second looks from all the monsters you have to fight through each level. The environments you fight in are huge and I emphasise the huge because you can litterly spend almost in hour in time walking throught a level. And you really need all this room for the fighting you do in this game.
The music is complete with incrediable scores, action adjusted music and the best sound effects you'll hear in a FPS. Believe me, what other game do you hear a screaming man with bombs in his hands as he comes to explode himself and you? That's how awesome it is.
The gameplay I played was the hardest of all, Serious Mode. You won't experience what the game truely is if you don't play this mode. I best describe this a chaotic, free for all bloodbath of bullets, melee and explosions. In any given level you could face up to 100+ baddies at a time. And I don't mean just boss battle areans. I mean anywhere. In small rooms, underwater, in the sky. Vigilence is eternal in this game.
You get your standard weapons; shotguns, pistols, machine guns. But you also get really fun toys to play with. A mini-gun, flame thrower, Sniper rifile, and my two favorite weapons: The Serious Bomb and the hand held Cannon. The Serious Bomb just anhillates every opponet in the vincinity and the Cannon takes bowling for blood into a multy killing must have.
The enemys you face are many and require different strategy depending on the situation. Some attack relentlessly from the ground, air and out of reach places. Some launch projectiles that you can just barely avoid. But most just launch bombs and rockets at you that you simply just can't avoid. I don't feel I have stressed this enough but when I say many I mean a shitstorm. Don't even think of bringing your single target weapons to these fights...unless your completely SOL.
As you're killing you foes you accumlate points. The game is based on a life and point score system. For every 100,000 points you score you get an extra life. You get them from discovering the palethra of secrets, cash, items you pick up and of course bouns scores from killing multiple enemys in a single shot. You'll need as many lives as possible in Serious mode because death is always a few seconds away.
At the end of every Chapter for a total of 5, you get to fight big bosses...and I mean BIG bosses. Bosses that can take up to a virtual vertical mile in hight. Nothing that is uncappable to defeat mind ya.
And if you think this game isn't fun enough, you can co-op all 36 levels with up to 2 people split screen or 4 players system link. This is truly one game to be shared with more than one person.
And the very last thing to mention about this game...some glitches. But they seem to varey from game to game. My first copy of the game, the music made the game crash from time to time. The newer, used copy I have shows trigger point in the levels via a red light on some of the terrian features. None game breaking though.
Overall this game is a cult classic for a reason. Which I really miss in most modern FPS these days. Just being a guy/gal/many people tearing through wave after wave of army size monsters with little more incientive than just to kill and collect shiny stuff. If you ever find this game in the bargin bin, snatch it up. It is worth all 3.98$ worth for the huge amount you get.

Here are some good tips for all those who profess in the ways of Serious.
The environment is you enemy: Destroy any objects like trees, lamps, barrels and other distructable brickabrack before fighting your enemys. Not only does it improve you vision but there is nothing worse than blowing youself up with your own rocket just because a tree got in your way.
Search and destroy: These levels are huge and hold lots of goodies for the dilagent. I've played this game 14 times through already and I still have missed some secrets. And sometimes you'll have to blow stuff up to find your secrets so keep your rockets handy at all times.
Keep your pistols close and you're enemies at a distance: Your best long range weapon in this game aside from the sniper rifle is your duel weild colts. They're extremely accurate, long range, saves ammo and for the most skilled players keep the legions of monsters a good distance from you, even the really big ones. (Not recommended for the bigger baddies in groups).
Stop and think what you grab: Just like FPS classics like Doom, lots of items trigger traps. Always take caution picking up items. Like weapons on a pedestal, tiny health or armor packs in a single area, even secret items you find. How you get out of these traps determin if the pick up was worth the effort.
Run, run, run and jump: Stay on the move, strife, jump. Never stand still when hoards of monsters are on your tail. Most melee enemies for example can easily be dodge with good strifing and timed jumping. (Note: doesn't work against 20 or more enemies in a close proximity).
Blow up: Make sure you can take as many baddies as you can in one shot. The more points you get, the more lives you get and the more things you get to blow to Hell.
and finally, save your nukes for a rainy day: Use those serious bombs if you really need to clear out an area. Usually an area around 50+ hoards.
Yay games!
