With interleague play going on this weekend, I thought I would pose a question: For baseball fans, do you feel you know the players and personnel of the other league well, and that you are familar with who is on the opposing league's teams, and what they are capable of?

Those who know me know that I'm an Atlanta Braves fan, and have been for 28 years. I feel that I know many of the National League players, except for maybe a few scattered ones in the Central or West Division, as the Braves dont see them as much. With the AL, except for teams like the Orioles, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Rays, I dont find I know many of the players in the AL much. The Braves are playing the Kansas City Royals in Atlanta this weekend. While I've heard of a couple of guys on the Royals, for the most part, it is a learning experience.

So, that's the question: Do you feel you know the players in the opposing league from whatever team you're a fan of?

Mitch

I personally have no interest at all in the National League. I'm from Boston and I'm a Yankees fan so I never pay any attention to the National League. Personally I get bored with the National League because I don't think pitcher's are hitters. Too many pitchers pull muscles, get worn out running the bases before going back out and throwing, or just stand up there and don't bother swinging. Not only that, but if it's the 6th inning and you have a big chance of scoring with the bases loaded and 1 out, but at the same time your pitcher is batting, now if you wanna send up a better hitter the pitcher is gone for the game.

Absolutely! I know all there is to know about both leagues. The only way you can call yourself a true baseball fan is to know both leagues.

I mean when you make preseason predictions ( as you do ) is to know both leagues. Or are you just talking out your arse when you predict the American League?

I am a Mets fan, but I know what is happening with the Padres or the Astros or the Twins or the Mariners as much as I know what is going on with my team. It is the only way I feel I am truly being a fan of the game.

If I followed the Mets and only the Mets, I am only getting 1/30th of the story. Do you read 55 pages of a 400 page book so why follow your team and not know about all the teams?

If your team gets to a trade deadline and they are looking to trade with an AL club how do you know it is a good trade or not. Based on what the guy does for your team at that moment? No!

It is not hard to follow ALL the teams. There are press guides. Media Guides and programs that allow you to follow other clubs. I am not saying be obnoxious like me. Heck with the internet it makes it SO easy to follow every team. Plus there is the MLB Network.

They do a program on the MLB Network called 30 Clubs in 30 Days and it tells you EVERYTHING about the teams and all the teams prospects. My point is it isn't hard to venture out. I promise you the Braves or their fans will not get mad at you. :chocrabbit:

I agree with this completely. I'm not a baseball fan, I'm an Oakland Athletics fan lol so I can't say I know everythign about baseball because I'm really not a fan of baseball. I just bassically know my team. I do know big name players though so I do know players that play for other teams, but I don't know everything going on with all teams. But I do know big baseball fans that know everything there is to know about baseball. And I think sometimes baseball fans can be kind of stupid because they seem to think that you should only stick to your league. For one thing, yeah you do play them in interleague play, but you also meet them if you're team is good enough to get to the WS. you should know about your competition.

and i think it's stupid that Baseball fans complain about interleague play. You do know all sports teams have two leagues and they play each other right? NFL has the NFC and AFC, NBA and NHL both have Easter and Western. You never hear those sports complain about having to play people in other conferances. Why is it so bad in the MLB? Why is it worse in the MLB than other sports that no one else complains about it? It's really not

I guess my point is, that I don't know alot about baseball outside of my team, but I do know some what lol, and there's nothing wrong with people knowing about both leagues.

I follow the Mets and Yankees so I am always up on both leagues. I wish they would dump the current structure and align the teams more like hockey, football, basketball. Mets, Yanks, Red Sox, Phils in same division, regional divisions. Yet it was great years ago when there were no playoffs and the winners of the NL and AL met in the World Series. The regular season meant something back then.

Just so you know, if they did it like the NFL, it would stay the same. Well i don't know about Phil, but Mets and Yankees would not be in the same division. Football does it like Baseball.

Same city teams, or neighboring city teams are in different leagues

So kindal like the Mets and the Yankees, one's in the NL, ones in the AL.

The NY Giants and the NY Jets are in different divisions, Jets are in the AFC, Giants are in the NFC. and Oakland Athletics are in the AL, San Fransisco Giants are in the NL... Oakland Raiders are in the AFC, San Fransisco 49ers are in the NFC.. so Mets and Yankees would still not be in the same divsion... but yeah I don't know about NHL but NBA they might be because I know Lakers, Clippers, Golden State (Who play in Oakland) and Sac Kings are in the same division... I think lol...

4u, to answer your question about my preseason predictions, I do those based on my knowledge of all the teams in the league, or deals that I've heard about, or read about. For the AL, I am most versed on the AL East because of the Yankees, and I know that the Twins and Angels are top teams. For some of the predictions below first and wild card in the AL, I'll admit sometimes I read about players in baseball publications before making my predictions.

All I know is, 4u, both of our teams are playing well now, even though it's only June. Who knows? Maybe they'll meet in the NLCS, but I keep waiting for Philly to get hot.

Mitch

No, I don't. I tend only to follow the Dodgers and the teams they play, giving me only occasional glimpses of the AL.

mils, you sound like me.

My father, who is going to be 70 in October, said that he believes that baseball should scrap the leagues, and just have however many divisions with the natural rivalries in the same division. He thinks the Mets should be in the same division as the Yankees, the two LA teams in the same division, the Giants and A's, etc, with maybe 12 to 18 games between each of the rivals a year. He has an interesting point, but I'm not sure if that would stimulate more interest, or less interest, as they already seem to have a decent system of the intra city rivals playing one series a year at each home park.

My guess is that baseball won't change it. It's been this way since interleague play started in 1997, and the owners seem to like it.

I'm a sports nerd and I play fantasy sports.

Of course I do.
