baseball is about 1/3 way done...who are most surprisng and disappointing teams

American League:

I don't think anyone really thought the Tampa Bay Rays would have the best record in the AL East heading into June. Not only that, but they don't show any sign of slowing down either.

In terms of disappointment, while I'm sure many people will pick the Yankees, I'd have to say the Seattle Mariners are my disappointment. Picking up Erik Bedard during the off-season had many people, myself included, figuring they would walk away with the AL West. They have the worst record in baseball right now, so that's certainly not what I expected.

National League:

I'm stuck between thinking the Marlins and the Astros for most surprising. Both were expected to be the cellar of baseball, and both teams are doing quite well.

I expected the Padres to do well, and they suck.

Just my thoughts.

Most surprising teams have to be the Marlins, White Sox, Rays, and Athletics. Of those, the only team I could really see sustaining their hot start for a whole season is the Devil Rays because they pitch very well and play great defense (strange as this is to say). I don't think any of those teams will make the playoffs though.

Most disappointing teams: NY Yankees, NY Mets, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers. I don't see the Tigers turning it around. Cleveland is only about .500 and is playing way below their talent level. I still think they'll run away with the AL Central. Seattle's pitching just isn't as good as people thought with Bedard underperforming and King Felix continuing to be inconsistent. The Mets are just a mess; I think it'll come down to the Phillies and Braves in the NL East. I think the Yankees will get back in it but I don't think they are nearly as good as the Red Sox and can only make the playoffs through the wildcard. I think they'll be in it with teams like the Rays, Twins, and Athletics for the wildcard as the season goes on.

Tampa for surprise. This week marked the first time in franchise history that division leaders played in tampa being the sox and rays

Disappointment, i wont say yankees cuz the last 2-3 seasons, this has been how they've played. I agree with the mariners being bad is a major shocker.

Also the major surprise is the fact that "The" carlos quentin is leading the majors in homeruns

I say the Yanks are the biggest disappointment, not because they were supposed to be good, but because its not the same without them. I say that as a Red Sox fan. You have to admit, they are one of the biggest markets in sports. Whether you like them or not,

When the Cowboys are good, its good for pro football.

When Notre Dame is good, its good for college football.

When Celtics-Lakers play in the finals, its good for the NBA.

When Red Sox-Yankees play for the pennant, its good for baseball.

Rays are the biggest surprise, just because they are the Rays.

Last year and the year before the yankees were slow out the gate and everyone was "omg, yankees have finally hit bottom" but they rebound

the difference this year is that the yankees aren't really underachieving, the team just isn't that good. their pitching is a mess and their young arms aren't good enough at this point to carry the load.

Most surprising team: The Marlins. I dont know if they will hold on for the rest of the season, but they have had a great start.

Most disappointing team: I would have to say my Braves. The difference between their home and road records is completely ridiculous. They remind me a bit of the 1987 Twins, who were dominant at home, but couldnt play for anything on the road. I can only dream that their season ends as the Twins did that year, with the World Championship. To be honest, if this continues, the Braves will likely finish around 500, or a little over or under.

The Tigers are the most disappointing. After the off-season acquistions of Dontrell Willis, Miguel Cabrera, and Edgar Renteria, They were picked to win it all. I'm just wondering which year the writers were refering to.
