Results from April 18th
There was almost a no-no and then there was a no-no. Let's start with the no-no. We will start in the American League. We start our journey with a night game in Chicago. A night like no other on the south side since winning the World Series in October, 2005.
It was a 40 degree night. There were 25,390 people at this little gathering on the Southside of Chicago. Of course, 20 years from now about 100,000 people will say they were one of the 25,390 to witness what happen at the ballpark on this night of April 18th,2007. But isn't that the way all stories go??? In the first inning, Mark Buehrle goes through the first inning 1-2-3. In the second inning, the Rangers who were in town on this night went 1-2-3. In the third inning, the Rangers went 1-2-3. In the bottom half of the third, Jim Thome supplied Buehrle a run with his 4th homerun of the year off of Kevin Millwood. This would give the White Sox a 1-0 lead. Then in the fourth inning the Rangers went down 1-2-3. Then in the fifth inning, with one out Mark Buehrle walks Sammy Sosa. Then Buehrle picks off Sosa. Then he retires the third out. Then Jermaine Dye in the bottom of fifth hit a Grand Slam homerun off of Millwood to give Buehrle a 5-0 lead. Then comes the sixth inning, and the Rangers went down 1-2-3. Then the seventh inning comes along and the Rangers go down again 1-2-3. Then in the bottom of that inning Jim Thome hit his 2nd homerun of the game and the White Sox and Buehrle had a 6-0 lead. In the eighth inning, Buehrle retires the Rangers again 1-2-3. On to the ninth, Matt Kata strikes out looking. Then Nelson Cruz went down swing. Gerald Laird ground out to third base and Mark Buehrle had himself a no-hitter and and was a walk from a perfect game. It is the first no-hitter thrown by a White Sox pitcher since August 11th,1991. That was Wilson Alvarez who did that against Baltimore. It is the 16th no-hitter thrown by the White Sox in their history. Congratulations to Mark Buehrle who pitched a masterpiece.
In Detroit, the Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning against the Kansas City Royals, thanks in part on a 2 run single by Craig Monroe. Jeremy Bonderman was pitching an outstanding game. Then after seven innings, Bonderman was lifted giving up one run on three hits with 6 strikeouts. Joel Zumaya threw seven pitches to get out of the eighth inning. Then Todd Jones came on and a dink, and a dunk, a close call on a double play attempt and suddenly Jones blew his first save and the Royals were tied with the Tigers at 3-3. Then the game moved to the tenth inning and John Buck gave the Royals the lead on a long blast to left off of Fernando Rodney ( 1-3 ) and the Royals picked up their fourth win of the season. Royals flush the Tigers 4-3.
In Tampa Bay, the Baltimore Orioles won the rubber game of the three game set by beating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4. Miguel Tejada went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. If you believe projections, Rodriguez will hit 112 homeruns and will drive in 287 runs this season. That is just projections folks. The Yankees moved over the .500 mark running their record to 7-6.
