OK, armpitlicker inspired me to create this one...

My vote goes to a John Lennon tribute that ran maybe two years ago. It featured Kevin Spacey, one of my favorite actors, sexy as hell and I just learned he graduated class valedictorian. I had no idea he could sing but he did a flawless rendition of "Mind Games" that really blew my mind...

XOXO

I loved the Ataris version of Boys of Summer. originally done by Don Henley of the Eagles.

Godhead's version of 'Eleanor Rigby' absotutely kicks *ss, and this from a Beatlefreak who normally loathes covers of my boys. It's just the BEST for driving late at night or pumping at the gym 😎

Great topic for a thread, Steph! (Wish I had thought of it!)

Best cover song? Bob Dylan originally wrote and recorded "All Along The Watchtower", but after The Jimi Hendrix Experience covered it, Bob would never perform the song in his own style ever again... he'd perform it more like Jimi's version.

some of my favorite cover songs:

"Build Me Up, Buttercup" by the Goops
"Born to Be Wild" by Stars of Stage and Screen
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Tori Amos
"Wild Horses" by Garbage
"All Along the Watchtower" by The Dave Matthews Band

Bob Dylan wrote and recorded a lot of songs that were later covered by many artists. I just thought of another of the best cover versions originally written and recorded by Dylan...

"Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds

Manfred Mann also recorded "The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo)" which is also a Dylan original.

"Can't Help Falling in Love" - Darren Hayes (cover of Elvis)
"Baker Street" - Foo Fighters (cover of Gerry Rafferty)
"Turn the Page" - Metallica (cover of Bob Seager)
"Whiskey in the Jar" - Metallica (cover of Thin Lizzy)
"Sweet Dreams" - Marilyn Manson (cover of Eurythmics)
"Tainted Love" - Marilyn Manson (cover of Soft Cell)
"Abracadabra" - Sugar Ray (cover of Steve Miller Band)
"Funkytown" - Pseudo Echo (cover of Lipps Inc)
"Darling Nikki" - Foo Fighters (cover of Prince)

Just a few off the top of my head... 😀

Two that are very different from each other but.....

Metallica's version of "Stone Cold Crazy"
And Soullive/Dave Matthew's Version of "Joyful Girl"

I had the Santana CD "Moonflower" playing in my car today and I remembered this thread. "Black Magic Woman" was originally done by Fleetwood Mac (pre-Buckingham/Nicks) but Santana's is the version that made it big. Great song!

How could I forget?!!! Otis Redding wrote and recorded this song first but it took Aretha Franklin to give it a new perspective and arrangement which took it to the top of the charts in 1967... I give you "Respect"! Even Otis loved her version of it... so much that he once said, "...a little girl stole my song from me..."

Good question Steph, it had me thinking for a minute or two 🙂

'You Really Got me' Van Halen

May be in the minority on this one, but I've always dug Devo's cover of the Stones' Satisfaction.

Thanks hon! I think The Kinks did the original, right?

XOXO

Yes thats correct Steph, The Kinks did the original.

I know everyone has heard "We Can Work It Out", by The Beatles. You can't beat Lennon & McCartney when it comes to great songwriting. But one of the best cover versions of that particular song was performed by Stevie Wonder. It rocks and is funky all at the same time. It may be one of the best cover versions of a Beatles song, period... although Wilson Pickett did a nice version of "Hey Jude".

The Tori Amos cover of Zeppelin's Thank You from 1993 is quite breath-taking. She also did a cover of Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat that I prefer over the original.

I like:

No Doubt doing The Vandals "Oi To The World"

Social Distortion doing Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire", which was a great cover of Farron Young's version as I understand it

Sinead O'Connor doing Prince's "Nothing Compares To You"

The Bangles doing (I think) Simon & Garfunkle's "Hazy Shade of Winter"

"The Crying Game" by Boy George. Can't remember the original - Brenda Lee???

Has anyone said "Pretty Woman" by Van Halen originally done by Roy Orbinson? VH did it so much better...all respect to Roy!

You're right about The Bangles covering Simon & Garfunkel. However, Dave Berry did the original version of "The Crying Game" back in 1965. I believe it was a hit in the UK. (And that isn't the same Dave Berry who writes the syndicated column)

I'm sorry but I'm a huge Bob Seger fan and no offense to Metallica because they are talented but they could not do "turn the page" justice... they honestly lack the emotion to go with it I think.
