A thread may have been started at some point regarding this topic, but I don't personally remember seeing it, and I am still somewhat a new member. So if this thread is a repeat, please forgive me...

Any-who...I was watching an old favorite movie of mine the other night, and I got to thinking about soundtracks. What do you guys consider to be some of the best movie soundtracks made?

A small list of some of my favorites:

Top Gun
Footloose
The Crow
Rocky Horror Picture Show
End Of Days
Blade

Mimi 🙂

Queen--Highlander (Its A Kind of Magic)

Queen--Flash Gordon

Transformer:The Movie. Yes, I also have the movie 😀

The Who--Tommy

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Star Wars(all three movies)

yeah im with fight club, and DEFINATLY rockey horror -

oh and just recently - Lord of the rings..

I love John Williams' soundtracks. The man is a genius and does a lot more than just make music to fit a movie. You can listen to the soundtracks and the music stands on its own.

All four Star Wars soundtracks. (The Phantom Menace soundtrack is wonderful with the addition of a choir in the "Duel of the Fates" section.)

Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Jurassic Park.

Lord of the Rings. (Not Williams, but still mostly instrumental except for Enya's contributions, which are unbelievable.)

As for other more straightforward soundtracks...

Fight Club

The Watcher

The South Park Movie

The Crow

Disturbing Behavior (The movie that turned me on to The Flys)

😎

Braveheart😱

I guess I have to say Titanic, it is the biggest movie of all time. But...you never know what The Lord of the Rings will do. 😎 😀

ALL Cameron Crowe flicks -- Fast Times, Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky -- have amazing soundtracks. Naturally, considering his passion for great rock music, his movies use music as well as any ever.

Concur with Dave re. John Williams sound tracks. He's the gold standard of movie musical composers.

A sound track IMO should be designed to enhance the movie, not sell sound track albums. Some that meet that criterion are:

O Brother, Where Art Thou?

True Grit

Ryan's Daughter

The Blue Max

The Rocketeer

Tommy really doesen't count - it's a musical, and the sound track is the point of the movie.

Strelnikov

Here's my favorites Patton,Cross of Iron,Anzio, and Apacolypse Now Also I loved the music from Starblazers I know that's not a movie but it's still great music I wish I could find that music on cd

Hmmmmmmmm... In terms of original scores, I'd have to go with the acknowledged masters. Sergei Prokofiev wrote some great ones, in particular his collaborations with Eisenstein, and is the impetus for a lot of what we hear today. Bernard Hermann is by far my favorite. A couple of the classic films he scored are:

Citizen Kane (early score for a film that needs no introduction)
Vertigo (what a wonderful score- helps creates the great mood that is the staple of this Hitchcock film)
Psycho (all the themes he uses are great- most people remember the violin stabs in the shower scene)
Sisters (listen to the score to this DePalma film a couple of times and it may haunt you for the rest of your life)
Obsession (DePalma's take on Hitchcock's Vertigo has another incredibly emotional, moody score)
Taxi Driver (completed on the day he died I believe- gives the film emotional impact of the great foreign films)

I can't say enough good things about these scores, but I think they speak for themselves by virtue of the quality of the films. I liked what John Corigliano did for Altered States. Of the recent lot, Carter Burwell, the Coen Brother's man, has done some good work.

Fun thread 🙂

Since I sadly have been abstaining from movie going and am not familiar with more recent releases, I confess to owning the following:

Shine
Evita (Madonna sadly lacks the heart to play the lead, but A. Banderas more than makes up for her failings)
The Fifth Element (strange film, weird music)
Forrest Gump

Older stuff like Footloose and Grease....and I even confess to having a tape of Iron Eagle (2/3 of the tracks by Queen interestingly enough). And ancient stuff like the Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls...Ok, enough said...🙄

Des

Here are some more.....

1. "Get Carter" starring Micheal Cain, music by Roy Bud.

2. "The lift to the scaffold" music by Miles Davis.

3. "The battle of Britain" (cant remember the blokes name)

Thanks Red - I'd forgotten about Battle of Britain. Best part of the musical score is the big air battle near the end, it ties all of the short combat sequences together. Another example of the score enhancing the movie, and one of the best.

Besides, there's not many things that sound better than a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The Spanish Messerschmidts used in the movie were re-engined in the 1950's, so they were flying with the Merlin also. Look closely at the engine cowl, the air intake and the exhaust stacks, definitely not the original DB601 engine.

Strelnikov

"never in the field of human conflict......."

Blimey Strell I bow before you, obviously an "expert" in more ways than one. It seems we have a common interest!

Best Movie Soundtracks

In my Humble Opinion:
* Patton
* The Natural
* Braveheart
* Yellow Submarine
* Gettsburg
* The Overture from JFK...that music had all those feelings of Hope before we decended into the Abyss.😎

I listen to Revenge of the Sith soundtrack in both my vehicles, since John Williams is the greatest soundtrack composer ever, next to Lalo Sciffrin and Elmer Bernstein.

The Heavy Metal soundtrack is also standard listening at the SK estate!

Some of my favorites.

Forrest Gump
Cocktail (I love Kokomo)
The Jazz Singer from 1980 (Neil Diamond rocks, and America is an awesome song)

Those are just a few I can think of.

I guess no one made the distinction between soundtrack and score, so I guess I'll just put down some for both.

Score:
The Last of the Mohicans
The Incredibles
Beetlejuice
Pan's Labyrinth
A Fistful of Dollars
Enemy of the State
Taxi Driver
A Clockwork Orange
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Soundtrack:
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Pulp Fiction
The Life Aquatic
Triplet of Belleville
Nightmare Before Christmas
Toys
Little Shop of Horrors
The Crow

Funny how the best cinema have the best tunes

What a &%^#*@ moron! Do you know anything about film scores? I mean anything?! Because if you did, you would not have listed any of those choices. Bernard Hermann- ridiculous! He may be the film composer by which all others are judged, but he couldn't compose his way out of a wet paper bag- with sheet music, a copyist, and a pair of galoshes! Don't bother responding to threads when you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about! I wouldn't show my face on this site again if I were you, unless you are fulfilling some sort of need to be ridiculed in all your clown-like glory. But if you're man enough to respond to this post (and I know you're not), you'll explain how you could have possibly listed Altered States on a best anything thread. It must not be easy for you to sleep at night!!

Does Quadrophenia count as a soundtrack :idunno: ?
