Well, it looks like St. Louis is gonna blow their lead and not make the playoffs, at least to me. Who else feels the same??? 😛

Too bad, that it happens to be the Astros pushing the Cardinals to the limit. But then again the Astros have heart that the Cubs wouldn't know anything about.

The National League playoff picture is just crazy. I read a huge article on SI.com that said depending on potential ties in the NL Central, West, and Wild Card, there could be playoff tiebreakers for the wild card, NL Central, and NL West all the way into Wednesday. The biggest thing this does is to give the Mets and their Game 1 starter El Duque tons of rest. My team, the Braves, could play spoilers this weekend by doing damage against Houston at Turner Field. The only unfortunate part for Atlanta is that no matter what happens, Sunday is their last game.
Personally, I say, with my team not involved, bring on all the tiebreakers! It would be fun to see a bunch of screwed up scenarios before the playoffs, just like the 1999 wild card tiebreaker between the Mets and Reds, that resulted in my prophecy of a Mets Braves NLCS, and Atlanta beating the Mets that year in awesome fashion.

I hardly consider the failure of the Cardinals as a choke job. They have been a mediocre team at best all season. The NL Central is the crappiest division in baseball this year. The Cardinals pitching has been horrible, and Jim Edmonds has gotten old in a hurry. Even if they are lucky enough to make the playoffs I don`t expect much out of them. In my opinion in the NL, its the Mets to lose. They are by far the best team.

Bill, the Cardinals may have just gotten a big lift, and may well now win the NL Central. The Braves beat Houston and Roger Clemens tonight, 4-1, while St Louis is winning big. One more Cards win, or Astros loss, and that division is over. It is unusual seeing the Braves play the role of spoilers the last week, after being division champs for 14 years, but, against Houston, it is sweet, considering they ended the Braves seasons in both 2004 and 2005. I hope Atlanta continues to do well in this series, to send Houston packing.

Mitch, when the Astros and Braves final was announced at Busch Stadium, the crowd was doing the tomahawk chop. Thankyou Braves.

You're welcome. I hope Atlanta continues to come through for the Cards this weekend. I have a particular distaste for the Astros, and I really hope they dont make it.

Mitch

I hope they don't make it either Mitch but it is probably for VERY different reasons. :smilestar

I understand where you are coming from, ticklingfeet4fun. The Astros have great starting pitching. They pose much more of a threat in a short series against the Mets than the Cardinals do. Its a mystery how Houston hasn`t run away with the division in the first place. Anytime you have 3 frontline starting pitchers and a premier closer you should be much better than a 500 team. Thats why I dispute the point of this thread. But then again, it was started by a Cubs fan. The 100th anniversary of their last World Series championship is rapidly approaching. Unless you are very very very very old, you wouldn`t understand what its like to win a World Series.

And the last time the Cardinals won may I ask??? Hey, you can dispute all you want, but the Cardinals are making history: for all the wrong reasons. To lose a 8 game lead this late in the season, they are folding up like chairs. Yes, its been a long time since the Cubs won, I'm not even disputing that, but the Cardinals have had plenty of chances, nothing to show for it. A little saying for ya, a little taste of honey is worse than none at all. Pray that your team holds on

Oh and while you're at it, remember, the Cubs won the season series from ya

I can only speak for myself, but from the beginning of the season I have never considered the Cardinals serious contenders, the talent simply isn`t there. They have had losing streaks of 8 games on two different occasions this season, and just stopped a 7 game losing streak the other night. In my opinion thats not choking, its just bad baseball. I`m a life long Cardinal fan, however nobody can accuse me of being a koolaid drinker. The Astros have more talent, and would better represent the divison. I consider ticklingfeet4fun a very knowledgeable baseball fan, and he just told us who the Mets would prefer to face in the playoffs.

Unclebill, I'd be surprised if the Mets did anything now. Even before Pedro went sour, the Mets had been playing sluggish ball for quite some time now.

Seeing all the contestants now, I'm not even gonna try to pick a winner. However, don't be surprised if you see a lot of posting activity from my friend the Miracles man in the near future. That scenario seems as likely as any.

The last time the Cardinals won was at least in our lifetime. Tell us oh unNatural one, have the Cubs won in your lifetime??? And the last time I knew the Cardinals have won 9 World Series titles. So how many titles has your team won in it's history??? In fact, have you even been to a World Series in your lifetime??? Funny you would make fun of everyone else's team and yet you HATE when everyone makes fun of yours. Live life by this rule: People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. You fired stones at the Mets fans and the Cardinals fans and so now you have to take your lumps. But it so deserved. You should have stones thrown at you just for being a Cubs fan. 😛

P.S. Big deal that you won a season series from the Cardinals.

Bill you can't listen to the unNatural one. He is still upset at 2003 and at Victor Diaz for spoiling 2004. So let him spew his little garbage and enjoy the fact that your team is not the Cubs. 😛

You bring up some good points, Knox. Sometimes I`m not so sure that clinching early in September is such a good thing. Its hard to turn the intensity on and off like that.

Good point, my man. Chicago is a great city, and I love Wrigley Field, but the Cubs must be cursed or something. I wonder if they pissed off the owner of a goat at some point???

That business with the goat has got to be the dumbest story I have ever heard in the annals of sports.

The Cubs' history after the second world war resembles a plot from a sitcom about an idiotic, incompetent organization...I guess a good example would be "Hogan's Heroes". It's actions by a harebrained, penny-pinching front office, bumbling, overrated players, and a passive, and even apathetic fan base have contributed to this continuing annual pathos. If I was a Cubs fan, I'd be smart enough not to admit it to anyone. You might as well admit you've got B.O.

Well Natural has admitted to being a Cubs fan. It is quite possible that he has that, too. :jester:
