My girlfriend recently introduced me to a series of movies under the title "Coffin Joe", shot in Brazil and spoken in Portugese (subtitled). Very cool but very strange. Circa 1963 and in black & white, the series tells the story of a mortician (who is only known as Coffin Joe in the states, in the movie is called "Ze Do Caixao") who has given up on the concepts of faith, hope, spirituality and the unknown and has a predetermined ideal that the only meaning of life is procreation and that he alone must create the new master race of men controlled by instinct and rationality rather than religion and supersitition. So he kidnaps women and tortures them to find his perfect women to create the perfect man. Pretty damn creepy. Also some nipplage and lotsa spiders...spiders are coooooooooooool....
I guess this would be classified in the horror genre, at least everything visual but it has elements of scifi and drama in their too. The guy himself is one of the preachiest horror movie icons among the rabble (Jason, Freddy, etc.) and has quite a few moments where he screams into the heavens renouncing god, the devil and everything in between. Hes incredibly complex, with some redeeming qualities to him (he sees children as purely innocent and will never harm one) and is plagued by visions of madness where the souls of his victims come back to haunt him. Of course all around hes just a sick demented bastard who does some pretty screwed up and PAINFUL things to people. He also has these really creepy long-ass nails that are actually his real nails....ew. And apparently the Church of Satanism likes this movie series too.... :weird: Only the first 3 are really decent I hear, after that they got really shitty. In the second movie "This Night I Will Posess Your Corpse" he has this cool hallucination of going to hell and seeing all the torment and shit...really trippy...
It may be very hard to find, I'm lucky enough to live near a video store that specializes in the bizarre.... 😀
