Boston Red Sox Designate Pitcher John Smoltz For Assignment

I just read on the Atlanta Journal Constitution.com website that Red Sox pitcher and former Braves great John Smoltz has been designated for assignment. Smoltz, who was rocked by the Yankees last night, has compiled a 2-5 record with an 8.33 ERA so far for the 2009 season. Smoltz can now be claimed on waivers, or the club has ten days to release him, or send him to the minors.

It would have to seem that with those numbers, and this move, the Hall of Fame career of John Smoltz is over, unless someone picks him up for the last two months, to have an extra pitcher. I dont see this as likely, though.

Smoltzie had a great career, but, as happens with all athletes, it seems that the end of his career has come.

If anyone has a link to this story, and could post, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mitch

Rumor has it that he actually might land in Detroit which is where he is from. Also it gives him a chance to finish his career with the organization from which he started his professional career. With the HUGE ballpark and the good fielding Tigers team, who knows, maybe Smoltz can find himself again. Certainly with the versatility that Smoltz brings as a starter and a reliever, it could give Jim Leyland more options down the stretch of this season.

As a Red Sox fan, I can say that the last couple weeks were hard to watch, especially knowing how dominant John Smoltz has been before. There were flashes of brilliance, but he lacked consistency.

I hope he does find a home with another team, because he can be a great asset to them if used properly.

Maybe smoltz will end up with the Metropolitans

Actually he will probably end up in Texas and that Homerun park of their. It would be nice if they actually had Major League Ballpark dimensions in Texas. Oh well...let the Minor Leaguers have their fun I guess.

For once you are right. The Houston Astros park is way to small. :mwahaha:

Sorry to say but the Sox made a mistake in signing him, sadly he doesnt have that much to offer

I hope someone signs him, so he doesnt have to end his career as Glavine likely will, by being released, and never pitching again. The difference is, the Braves released Glavine this year without actually having him pitch in a major league game, something I did not agree with. At least the Red Sox gave Smoltz some chances to pitch in major league games, and made their decision based on those efforts.

Update: Smoltz has been released from the Red Sox, and is now free to sign with any team he wishes.

Best of luck to him.
