Boy denied diploma for blowing kiss...

I've heard there are problems with people getting out of hand at graduation ceremonies and certainly some rules of decorum are needed. This however is more then a bit ridiculous.

this is just a bunch of bull crap what the hell is rong with people theses rules and crap are getting out of hand makes me sick

He should've given admin a certain gesture involving a finger right after being denied.

lol That is basically what i said in my email. I said "he blew a kiss where others would have flipped you off" Why on earth punish him for that?

Well, the articles, news stories and celebrity status surrounding him now are just as good as a diploma.

College Dean: You have a diploma son? How do I know you graduated?

Kid: Can I borrow your laptop for a second? There's something you should see. 😀

In other words two wrongs make a right?I'm assuming from the article that the young man returned to his seat without making a scene. This tells me he has far more class and common sense then the buffoon who denied him his diploma.🙂

I might be a stiff-arsed Brit, but i gothe impression tha merica was founded on freedom of expression (obviously mass murder, rape, pillage does not count. but you now what I mean)

Maybe that school should read the American Constitution?

Well duh I r kidding. 😛

What is it about working as an administrator in a High School that causes people to become control freaks and asshats? Or is it that such people are attracted to the job?

Yes because a kind gesture is reason to deny a boy the more than likely biggest day of his and his families life. *sarcasm*

OMG, he blew a kiss. Oh no, he's causing a disruption to the graduation ceremony! :sarcasm: I've seen a lot worse things that happen during a graduation ceremony that warrant that type of reaction but a kiss? Really? That's just messed up.

I read an excerpt in which the "administrator" brought up prior year incidents, like silly string and beach balls. What this kid did doesn't even come close. Common sense is dying a slow and painful death.

Indeed.

Geez, I've seen worse. I saw a kid do a flip after he got his diploma once. The admin didn't flip a bitch afterwards.

Some people enjoy the power over other people way too much

Oh god. I go to school in that area. This kind of behavior makes me want to smack administrators. These people are supposed to support and help these kids to succeed, not bully them around.

I am so glad I'm not from that state. Otherwise, I would be kind of embarrassed.

Not only does it not make sense to me that he was punished for blowing a kiss to his mother; it doesn't even make sense to me that the administration would prefer that graduating students not do this. After all, even if you allow that school is a place to be constantly told what to do and chided for zigging when they want you to zag, graduation isn't supposed to be that. Graduation is supposed to be the night that belongs to the students, the night that everybody else in the room is honoring them, not bossing them around.

But, having said that, I will now shift gears and offer what I think is really behind that. I think what's involved is that schools are under pressure to draw up rigid codes and then adhere to them with no room for deviation or judgment calls, all to avoid lawsuits. Somehow or other, the kiss went afoul of one of the written rules, and they feared a suit if they allowed that and then punished somebody else for a real disruption. Just a guess, kind of like when a second grader gets sent home for kissing a girl on the cheek. I don't think it's a matter of administrators being power-happy, but rather, afraid of their own shadows.

But again, I don't think this explanation makes their behavior sensible. They're still idiots.

But in any case, the only people who would bring up a lawsuit are people who are homophobic, and those people just need to chill the fuck out. Or be shot, whichever.

Late update: Looks like the boy's parents have lawyered up, and the school principle is trying to give the boy his diploma.

I'd take 'em to court anyway, regardless of whether or not the principle hands over the diploma. To me, it would be more about the embarrassment of being treated that way in front of everyone on what should have been one of the best days of his life. Sue their asses and win, hopefully.

What bothers me is that lawyers and lawsuits even enter into this equation. Is a bit of common sense too much to hope for these days?
