Two evenings ago, I was sitting at one of the large tables on the top floor of our college library studying for an upcoming history exam. Since it had rained very hard all day, I had taken off my soaked shoes and socks and placed them under the table to dry out.
When I got up to get some water from the fountain, I asked the girl sitting across from me whether she would watch my things for a second. When I had sat back down, the girl slowly bent down under the table as if she was looking for something in her backpack. I was completely surprised when I suddenly felt something scraping against the arch of my bare foot.
I looked at the girl quizzically when she reappeared, but the expression on her face didn't betray any knowledge of what had just happened. Assuming it was just an accident, I continued to concentrate on my book, slightly distracted. When she bent down again and something touched my toe this time I acted like I didn't notice, but for a second I thought that there was the semblance of a smile on her face.
We were sitting there for another hour or so, without talking, without anything else happening. Only once in a while I could feel her shoe accidentally brushing the side of my foot for a brief second or so.
When she finally got up and left I began to wonder what would have happened had I put my bare foot into her lap, and whether I had only imagined the entire thing. To be honest, I am wondering still, but I do hope that she will be back to the library soon for me to find out...
