NBA and sports fans have probably heard the news. In their first season, after a 3-10 slide following a great start, the Brooklyn (Formerly New Jersey) Nets have fired head coach Avery Johnson.

I dont follow the Nets that closely, even though I live here. I mostly hear about them from reading the net, and reports on the news.

While the Nets have been struggling of late, I think that personally, Johnson was fired for two other reasons.

One, the Nets want to be a big time contender, after many years of losing, following their move to New York.

Two, the New York Knicks, for the first time in many years, since the Pat Riley years of the early and mid 90s, are playing like an elite NBA team.

It would seem that the Nets recent struggles, combined with their move to NY, and the Knicks solid play so far this season, led Brooklyn to make this move.

Some columns I've read think that Mr Johnson got a raw deal with his firing. Granted, the Nets are 56 games under 500 during his tenure, but, it wouldnt seem that a team could go from NBA doormats to one of the elite in less than half a season.

Thoughts on Avery Johnson's dismissal?

Phil Jackson is rumored to be the leading candidate to replace Avery Johnson. That would be interesting.

But yes, I think the Nets had a bit of a knee jerk reaction in firing Avery Johnson. It is sort of how our society and specifically, big business, has become: "What have you done for me lately" mentality.

I have heard that Deron Williams was not on board with Avery Johnson. In the NBA, a coach is more likely to go rather than a star player.

I believe Johnson lost the team overall and it didn't help that Williams never really bought into the offensive system Johnson had put together. Plus are the nets really a team? it seems to me they are a team of big names trying to make it work. They are trying to be the Knicks which they will never be.
