In April we visited some of my favorite places in Austin. You can
see those pictures here. This month the tour resumes.

The Drag, (Guadalupe Street from MLK Blvd. north to 27th Street) serves as the western border of the UT campus and is a centerpiece of student life.

First three pictures: The Dobie Center is home to retail outlets and restaurants.

Crossing the street we enter the area known as West Campus. Behind the commercial zone, thousands of apartments and condominiums provide housing to UT students. Painted by local artists, murals adorn many of the buildings.

The Jeremiah Hamilton Building in Symphony Square is now headquarters of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. The 350 seat amphitheater on the banks of Waller Creek brings classical musicians from around the world to Austin.

Serranos Tex-Mex food makes it a popular spot with the downtown lunch crowd. More pictures of Waller Creek.

The Texas Governor's Mansion is located at 11th Street and Colorado Street, across the street from the capitol building. Construction began in 1854 and the mansion was completed in 1856.

In the early morning hours of June 8 2008 a Molotov cocktail was thrown over the fence, causing major damage. In a stroke of good luck most of the historic treasures in the home had already been put in storage for a long-planned renovation project. The mansion reopened in June 2012, after $25.4 million dollars in restoration work. The arsonists remain at large.

This picture was taken by sticking my camera through the bars of the front gate. The grounds and mansion can be visited only by appointment.

Located in Zilker Park, the Zilker Botanical Garden is a peaceful urban oasis in the midst of a bustling city.

Swedish immigrant Swen Magnas Swenson came to Travis County in 1838. He bought some land south of Austin and started a ranch which he christened Govalle, meaning "good grazing land" in Swedish. This cabin was built around that time. It was moved to Austin years ago so it could be protected and preserved.

Last two pictures: Built in 1866 on land owned by a man named Richard McKenzie, the Espranza School Building was one of the first schools in Travis County.

Located at 9th Street and North Lamar, the Shoal Creek Saloon brings a taste of Cajun Country to Austin. The deck overlooking Shoal Creek is a popular spot, and a fan powered misting system helps diners stay cool.

On this visit I opted for a chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes smothered in pepper cream gravy and a side of what tasted like garden fresh green beans.

This park is part of the Mueller Development Project, which is bringing the site of the long gone Mueller Airport back to life.
