After a fun couple days relaxing, getting over jet lag, and tickling each other silly, we were ready to go visit my parents for a while.
I got up early and gave Mom a call. “Hey Mom, how is everything?” I asked.
“Billy!” Her voice leapt when she heard me. “Where have you been all summer?”
I gave her the rundown, including the scare we had with Krista being kidnapped. It was the last time I was going to tell that story, we both intended to put it behind us.
“Well you’ll be there in time for the annual family camping trip.” She said.
A flood of memories came rushing back. Every summer our family practically took over the campsites at the Tomlinson Run. My Aunts and Uncles all rented lots, with my older and younger cousins in tow. We spent a week every summer hiking trails, cruising the lake in paddle boats, and staying up late just talking around the campfire. I loved it.
“Well I’m up for it, but I’m not sure about Krista. She’s a California girl.” I joked.
“Bring her along, I’m sure she’ll be fine.” Mom said. I was about to answer when I felt ten finger skittering my sides just above my hips. I slid down in the chair defensively, trying not to laugh. Krista had managed to sneak up on me.
“Hey Mom I gotta run, see you tonight, love you.” I hung up and turned to face my girlfriend.
“Aww what’s the matter Billy? Is somebody ticklish?” Krista giggled, wiggling her fingers at me. She was wearing a long night shirt and the slippers I’d bought her for Christmas. I stood up and went at her tummy, tickling away.
“Aaah! Heheheheheheeeyyyyy... come on, I was just playing.” She laughed, trying to squirm away from me. I stopped and told her the news.
“Okay, just because I’m a city girl, doesn’t mean I can’t rough it for a few days.” Krista told me, hands on her hips.
“It’s not exactly roughing it. It rains at least one whole day every time we go. So we bring a tv.” I answered, remembering how I’d used an extension cord and power strip to play my Nintendo while sitting in the car so I wouldn’t wake anyone during a rainy night.
“So what is there to anyway?” She asked, while turning on the coffee.
“Lots really. I could take you out on the paddle boats, those are always fun. We can walk the trails, one of them goes past a lake so there’s great scenery.”
“Sounds like fun.” Krista took two mugs out of the cupboard, poured the coffee and handed me a cup. She added cream to hers and we sat down. “I guess I’ll need suitable clothes then.”
After eating a quick breakfast, packing some different clothes for me, then making a quick stop to get clothes for her, we were on the road.
We’d both settled on an outdoorsy couples look with closely matching outfits. Red flannel shirts, and jeans. We had never seen each other dressed quite like that before, and I had to admit she was right when she said we looked cute.
We arrived at my parent’s place about an hour later. Dad met us in the driveway, he had been busy getting the small camper ready.
I realize I haven’t gone into much description about my parents before but nobody came here for that right? Here’s a quick rundown. My Dad was in his 50’s and just to look at him, you saw a man who’d worked hard for everything he had. He always reminded me a little of Jed Clampett with his common sense wisdom and quiet way of reprimanding when I’d gotten out of line as a kid. He could also flip a switch and nail you with smart sarcastic humor, which I inherited.
My Mom was in her 40’s. She had long brown hair, and the same color eyes as mine. She could be the most loving giving person you’d ever met. But like my Dad, you could flip a switch by messing with her family, particularly me, and that mama bear would come out. A teacher that had unfairly given me detention once found that out.
He put the sleeping bags down inside the camper and greeted us. “Hey Bill,” He said, meeting me with a handshake. “Krista, it’s great having you along. I hope you two don’t mind sharing a tent, there’s only one bed in the camper.”
I looked back at her, she shrugged. “I don’t mind if Billy doesn’t.”
“As long as you behave yourself.” I said. That earned me a punch in the arm that got Dad laughing.
Krista went inside to help Mom finish packing food in the coolers while I helped Dad hitch their tag along to the truck.
“So is Doc going to make the trip?” I asked. Doc was the nickname I’d given my older sister, Marie. When we were kids, anytime I’d gotten a scrape bad enough to warrant a bandage she’d wait for Mom to finish putting medication on it, then stick the bandage to me. Oddly enough, she’d gone to med school and just recently started her own practice.
“I wish she could, but the other doctor she brought in as an assistant needed the weekend off.”
“I guess Duncan won’t make it either huh?” I said, feeling crestfallen. Duncan was my older brother who was living proof rednecks didn’t just live in the south. He taught me everything I knew about fishing, hunting, and classic rock.
I hadn’t seen much of him since he got married and moved away, other than holiday visits. His wife Trudy was like having another big sister around. Whenever their visits ended, I’d always pretend that I didn’t want to kiss her goodbye and she’d chase after me, tackle me and cover my face with kisses. Which got uproarious laughter from everyone else.
My oldest nephew Kurt was more like my little brother. I’d felt the same about Eddie, who was my other nephew.
“Sorry Bill, looks like it’s just the four of us.” Dad said, with a pat on my back. I nodded, and knew how Krista must have felt being hours away from her parents.
Before long we were there. Dad set up the camper, and I put up the tent. Instead of laying our sleeping bags side by side, I unzipped them, and laid on on top the other.
I knew Krista would prefer to snuggle close if we were going to be in the tent alone. Besides I remembered how cold mornings were up here and I’d planned on taking advantage of her being a human heater.
“Billy, since Krista hasn’t been here before, why don’t you play tour guide?” Mom said, she’d read my mind.
“Ready when you are.” Krista smiled, walking toward me with a picnic basket in hand.
“When did you do this?” I asked, pleasantly surprised.
“Before we left, your Mom gave me this idea.” Krista said, I looked over at Mom who smiled.
“One romantic lake view picnic coming up.” I said, picking up the neatly folded checkered blanket in one arm, and giving her the other one. Krista waved to them over her shoulder and I led her on a shortcut through the woods.
“She’s quite a young lady isn’t she?” Carl said to Rose, as Billy and Krista walked out of sight.”
She walked over, and leaned back, resting against him slightly, he put his arms around her. “We definitely raised our boy right. He’d do anything for her.”
“Remind you of anyone babe?” He said, giving her a hug.
“Mmmhmm...” she answered. “Looks like we’ve got some time to ourselves.
Carl listened the summer wind blow through the trees. “I hope they don’t take too long. Rain’s going to be here in a couple hours.”
Rose sighed, “And I wanted a campfire dinner tonight. It rains every time we come out here.” She laughed.
After a 20 minute walk through the woods, we arrived at the lake, which sat on top of a hill surrounded by pine trees on all sides. The warm afternoon sun glinted off the water as a gentle breeze ruffled her hair a little.
The only breaks in the dense woods were the beaten path which carved a scenic route through the woods, and the shortcut from our usual campsite I’d discovered one summer when I was in High School.
“Wow...” Krista said breathily, taken by the serene beauty of the lake.
“And that’s why I love this place. It’s quiet. There’s no swimming allowed so almost nobody ever comes up here.” I said, spreading out our blanket. I sat down, then laid back, letting out a contented sigh.
Krista took my cue and did the same. After a moment, she lifted her foot. “Can you take these off for me?”
“Feet hurt angel?” I asked, unlacing her hikers.
“Yeah, I’m not used to boots, I haven’t worn these much.” She scrunched her toes and flexed her ankles once her feet were free of the heavy boots. “Aah.. much better.”
I took my cue and began gently rubbing her feet through the soft thick socks. Those boots had gotten her feet warm but they hadn’t began to sweat.
She closed her eyes, and let out a soft purr. “Mmmm... You have no idea how good that feels tiger. I just might have to marry you.”
I felt my heart melt. “You’d seriously marry me?” I asked.
“Duh.” She retorted, then giggled, pushing on my chest with her other foot. I grabbed it and started tickling away.
“Hahahahaha Billy come on, hahahaha that really tickles!” She squirmed on the blanket, but wasn’t trying too hard to pull her foot loose of my grip. I grabbed the other foot and doubled my attack.
Krista let out a squeal, and bucked her hips off the blanket. “Hahahahaha tigerrrr...” she giggled and started to kick a little. I stopped and gave both her soft cotton clad arches a little squeeze.
Once she settled down a little, she sat up and kissed me. “That actually felt really good. My feet feel all better now.” She bit her lip, smiling.
We both decided it was better not to get carried away and unpacked our lunch.
I was surprised as I bit into a peanut butter and banana sandwich. “I haven’t had one of these since I was little.” I said after swallowing the first bite.
“Your Mom told me they were your favorite. I’m going to have to know these things if I’m going to be your wife.” She smiled, taking a bite of hers.
We finished our picnic and I felt something in the air. My Dad had taught me how to tell when rain was coming, clouds weren’t always an indicator.
“We’d better get back to camp angel. It’s going to rain soon. Trust me.” She put her boots back on, as I gathered up everything. Moving downhill back to camp was faster and we were back in half the time. We just made it back to the little camper before the rain hit.
“Who’s up for a movie?” Mom asked, as the rain began to pour, thumping against the metal roof.
It was nice, the four of us chilling together with a movie, listening to the rain. I’d gotten to know her parents while we were in California, now she was getting to know mine.
The rain let up after a couple hours and my Dad surprised everyone with his stash of dry logs in the back of the truck. We had campfire burgers for diner and s’mores for dessert.
Day turned to evening and Krista asked question after question about me and what I was like when I was little. Eyes alight with joy the entire time. Mom had fun telling story after story about me, no matter how embarrassing I thought they were Krista found them cute.
Eventually night fell and even though it was still summer the evening air had gotten chilly. We all took turns using the camper as a changing room. Mom and Dad retired to the camper while Krista and I took a flashlight and climbed inside the tent.
“I like what you’ve done with the place.” Krista joked, taking off her keds she’d put on in place of her boots. She looked adorable, her long blonde hair trailed over her shoulders. I’d never seen her in flannel pajamas before, but I liked them.
“Thanks, I decorated it myself. The master bedroom is the best feature.”
She smiled and slid between the heavy sleeping bags, then patted the space behind her.
I had no problem obeying this request. While it was true we didn’t want to make it a habit of sleeping together, we both knew we could control ourselves. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy it.
“Comfy?” I asked, as she snuggled backward against my chest.
“Mmmhmm... I feel so safe with you.” She answered, gently pulling my arm around her waist.
“I nuzzled her neck through her soft hair planting a kiss, and felt a purr rumble in her throat.” It was moments like this that made me realize how lucky I am. She was smart, with a sweetheart personality, and the biggest heart of anyone I’d ever met, not to mention she was stunningly adorable.
I was completely in love with her, I knew she was the one. I’d never felt anything like this before. And I couldn’t be happier.
“I could just fall asleep right now.” I said, the warmth of her body had such a calming effect on me.
“What am I boring you?” She laughed. Moving her head so her hair tickled my face.
“No... just feels so good with you...” I answered, ignoring the tickly feeling on my nose and cheeks, feeling myself drift into sleep. What I couldn’t ignore was the soft skittering of her nails on my side.
“Hahahahaha what are you doing?” I asked, she stopped when I rolled away, then rolled back.
“I thought that was obvious.” She said, with a playfulness in her voice.
“Oh you wanna rumble huh?” I said, sliding both arms around her, my hands poised on her tummy. I couldn’t see her face, but I knew she was doing that cute thing where she bit her lip. I called it her “come get me” look.
I heard a cute squeak of anticipation from her, then lightly dug my fingertips into her tummy through the soft flannel. Immediately she began squirming against me, not able to get away.
“Hahahahaha... *giggle*” Peals of ticklish laughter came bubbling out of her. It was that sweet bubbly giggle that got me. Just when you think she couldn’t possibly be more cute, she proves you wrong.
She fought back, I wasn’t as ticklish as her, but those nails and soft fingertips gave her a certain advantage. “En garde!” She said, and her I felt her nails attack my hips, along the waistband of my pajama pants.
I shifted my hips back defensively, stifling a laugh, but she stayed on the attack. I rolled onto my back, If she came at me in this position, I’d have a great shot at her tummy, sides, and underarms.
Or so I thought, she quickly pounced on my chest, her knees pinned my arms down and she put her weight on my forearms using her calves. I could use my legs to push her off, but it might hurt her, and I’d never do that.
“Got you now now tiger.” She said grinning, I tried to pull my arms free, but I was stuck. She’d thought this out.
As I struggled, she took her index fingers and drilled into my underarms, no matter how tightly I tried to pin my arms to my sides, she was able to wiggle them in.
“Aaaahhahahahaha Kris, come onnnnn... no fairrrrr!” She was getting me good, it was fun despite my protests.
“It’s only unfair because you’re losing.” She said in a singsong tone, then attacked my sides near my hips again.
“Awwwhahaha give me a breaaaak!” What really made it worse was the fact that my parents were only about 20 feet away in their camper. I did my best to hold it in, and keep my voice down, and it took most of my energy to concentrate.
I wiggled my fingers in futility, but felt a familiar softness. She’d made a tactical error and I was about to fight back.
“Aaaahahahahaha! Hey!” She let out a surprised laugh, then doubled her efforts. I realized she couldn’t move her feet away without letting me up, so I alternated between tickling her right and left foot.
We’d given up on being quiet, and were both laughing hysterically. She was shifting her weight slightly, trying to keep her feet away from my hands. I was bucking my hips a little from her pressing her thumbs into my waist.
“Hahahaha... I’ll stop if you haha stop...” I offered.
“Nooohohoho wayyyy hahahahaha. Woooaahh!” She lost her balance and landed on me.
“Well hello there.” I said gazing into those beautiful blue eyes.
“Hey yourself...” she said with a kiss. I loved the feel of those soft lips. Her chest pressing against mine wasn’t exactly bad either. We started kissing, getting swept up in the moment.
“Maybe we should...” We said simultaneously, and laughed. She rolled off me and snuggled back into my arms.
“I guess we’re starting to think alike.” She said. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure angel.” I answered, feeling that relaxed drowsiness come over me again.
“Do you regret that we don’t... have sex?”
This was the first time that we’d really discussed it. But I already knew the answer. “Not at all. I love you angel, and you definitely rev my engine. But I’m not going to break that promise we made.”
“I knew you were the right guy.” She said hugging my arms that were wrapped gently around her. “I feel the same way about you, but yeah we can wait. I love you Billy.” She turned and kissed me.
“I love you too Krista” I said kissing back, and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
I got up early and gave Mom a call. “Hey Mom, how is everything?” I asked.
“Billy!” Her voice leapt when she heard me. “Where have you been all summer?”

“I knew you were the right guy.” She said hugging my arms that were wrapped gently around her. “I feel the same way about you, but yeah we can wait. I love you Billy.” She turned and kissed me.
“I love you too Krista” I said kissing back, and drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
