Honda civics are good cars, and I hear they last quite a while.
Just don't buy one that has been "modified" as someone may have drove the piss out of it. It could lead only to problems with repairs and such.
My best advice - whatever you decide on, find out what the insurance is going to cost. Most people don't even think of this til after signing the loan and then get a shock at what the insurance is going to cost. If you finance, you will be required to carry full coverage in most states.
Geo metro - I have not owned one, but if this is your first car, it would be a good investment. Good on gas, small, and I don't think the insurance would hit too hard. I don't know if they are real slow or not.
Yeah don't worry too much about what is "in". Worry about what you can afford and what is reliable. Steer away from cars that are known to have serious engine or transmission problems like older Pontiac bonnevilles or Ford Taurus
