You know what I mean. "I thank God for giving me the ability to... *insert skill here". Think they ever really mean it? I tend to doubt it. Discuss, if it pleases you.

I think they absolutely do mean it, I think it fits perfectly with that type of personality to thank the creator for making them 🙂

I think its a crock, nothing but publicity designed to make themselves look more wholesome or hold a more winnable personalty.

I tend too agree, and i would throw most politicians into the mix. It's folderol meant for public consumption and not much else.

I didn't realize Scientologists believed in god. I thought they worshiped some aliens or something.:couch:

Depends on the celeb. I have absolutely no doubts about the sincerity of Kathy Griffin's mockery of them, however. 😀

I dunno ...
Everything is such an act these days.

Who even knows who really does want to thank God and who wants to be next in the spotlight. I've lost count.

I believe they do mean it. It would be bad to just be a PR stint cuz a lot of people dont believe in God so you dont want to delib piss them off

I have to laugh tho, often athletes thank god and say God helped them win, etc etc

No doubt both teams pray for a win so to speak, well one team gets their prayers answered and one doesnt, does that mean God hates your team?

yes

what would be even better is if someone from the losing team actually blamed God for the loss

now that would be funny...

True, but more people believe in a God than disbelieve in one. Gotta go with the majority if you're wanting to win the hearts of the people...

Call me cynical, but I don't believe they really mean it... it's uttered by almost everybody, including atheists (no God) and Scientology enthusiasts (Star Wars is REAL), as has already been pointed out. Vague religious references are an inherent part of Western culture; then, too, the people who leave out God, family, etc. are liable to be pounced on by the media (figuratively, if not literally, speaking).

If we want to dig into over-the-counter NyQuil psychology, we could go into how the exultation of the moment, i.e. being onstage receiving an Oscar at a huge ceremony, might feel like a spiritual experience and put a person into such a mindset as they might start thinking about religion - even if they aren't normally religious. I'm not suggesting that it would cause devotion to God, but it might cause a general feeling comparable to religious devotion, which could be enough of a reminder to cause someone to thank God "just in case" (be they worried about offending fellow celebrities, the media, the public, or a potentially real Almighty).

'Course, it's probably all just part of the usual way things go (i.e., complete B.S.), but I like to feel sophisticated 🙂

"I just wanted to thank an omnipotent, omnipresent, intangible being that I can't see, touch, smell, or hear, which arbitrarily created man and woman with 'original sin' which I made up, who forced those two people to suffer, but then manifested himself in a way that violated his own laws and rules, so that he could be beat up and chastised throughout his entire 'life,' then was killed with the purpose of erasing the 'original sin' which he arbitrarily created in the first place. Without him I could have never put on such a great performance that I would have won an award."

Come on, now. Really?

Right on. Actually, I was thinking of the end of yesterday's Maryland/UNC game. Greivis Vasquez immediately came out with the old, "I'd like to thank God first and foremost yaddayaddayadda." Maybe he meant it, but it's just so overplayed. You hear it so much from athletes and celebrities alike that it tends to lose its meaning after a while.

I think celebrities are like everyone else. Some mean it, some don't.

Sincerity does not increase or decrease with being famous. Human nature always takes precedence.

This really annoys me. I don't begrudge a celebrity, sports person whatever winning an award for a job well done, but, when they have to go on and on about thanking his Almighty, I cringe.

Its so common place, can't they come up with something else, it just seems false to me.

If it were just your regular John or Jane Doe, would you believe them?

Why is it that when those who were actually blessed with gifts, abilities, talents thank God in public, you have to question their sincerity? They actually have something to be thankful for and some of you turn your noses to them when they show gratitude.

I agree with you.

Aren't we all looking into this a little too deeply? Ironically, people here are showing little faith towards the sincerity of celebs, yet what has God taught you? To have faith.

Being an Athiest, I really couldn't care if celebs thank God or not, but I see it as awknowledgement and unity. We all have talents to be thankful of, and this is simply one more way for people to make sense who they are. How can anyone complain about that?

How about professional prize fighters?

"I would like to thank God for giving me the ability to punch the ever-living shit out of my opponent. Thank you, God for making his eye swell up to the point that his trainer had to cut it open with a razor blade. I would just like to ask you for one more thing, God. Please give me the strength to kill my next opponent in the ring, go out later that night, get drunk, be accused for raping a woman, and go to prison for at least 5 years. Amen."

Isn't religion a psuedoscience, perhaps a philosophy?

I agree. God gave them their gift, so it's only natural to thank God. It may not seem that way because it's so repetitive and everyone does it. But I think they mean it.

You are right, things would get repetitive. After all, God's a pretty popular guy.

I wonder about regular, normal, non-celebrity folks who say things like that, too.

I mean, I see what they are more like most of the time to begin with!
